long layers are very versatile, they help bring out any wave or curl, but are easy to straighten as well. that would also help with any unwanted weight from having thick hair. just don't let the stylist cut layers too short... that's when you get the almost mullet look, and no one want that.

do a step cut, curl it, do a prom cut, a messy bun, etc
