I took some digital photos of flowers I grew in my garden, and then put them on my computer. I cropped them to get rid of everything in the background and they look great!

What category of images would a professional NOT capture?

Anything can be caught in a camera and look professional if care is taken.

Consider the image quality, dramatic lighting, properly composed, appropriate background.

You will be wasting a lot of time and effort going around snapping picures at random. What makes an image "professional" is all those things I mentioned, PLUS the market.

A publisher of motorcyle magazines will not be interested in a photo of a butterfly, no matter how tastefully done. A publisher of images for Christian newsletters will have no interest in glamour model shots.

Even the most mundane subjects can have a market if the image applies to the proper need. A plain, full profile of a bridge is of no interest as a work of art, but might be received very well in an architectural digest. The SHADOW of a ball bouncing off of a wall means little to the sporting goods manufacturer, but can be considered a nice piece of artwork to a sports enthusiast.

Pick up a copy of an art magazine, photography magazine, or even a National Geographic. Try any good magazine. Try to pick out why each image was chosen for the magazine. Then, try to emulate those characteristics.

It might be the clear, detailed focus.

It might be a close in picture of just a part of the subject.

It might be the capture of an interesting movement.

It might be a stark contrast with the background.

It might tell an interesting or compelling story.

Go out and tell your story.
