I have always been interested in singing and wanted to improve. I am not amazing but I have a voice that carries potential and I definetely think voice lessons could be helpful. I am curious about a few things:
-cost range?
-what do they teach?
-what should I look for in a teacher?
-should I go there knowing anything?(currently I don't, other than what I was born knowing)
-Feel free to all other info that you think would be helpful to me.
Thanks

I think it depends on your goals. Do you have dreams of being the lead in community theater, or do you dream of Broadway? If fame is not your overriding concern, I would look for a moderate-priced teacher. If you are still in college or on a budget, you could probably find a young teacher or voice student who would teach you for maybe $12-20 a lesson. Some of the best teachers I have met charge as much as $50 (in the Southwestern U.S.). The teacher I learned the most from in a short time was a church choir director, but she also sang professionally. Her biggest emphasis was on learning how to breathe using muscles and areas we didn't even know existed. Breath support will probably be the number one area of learning for a long time. If I were to choose a teacher today, I would pick one that I liked to listen to personally, who was active and involved without being so much in demand that he or she didn't have time to really treat you as an individual. If you are interested in learning a particular style - you could also ask a prospective teacher what style or styles he or she teaches. I don't know what you were "born" with, but another big area that most good singers will know is that you have to open your mouth wider for everything than you do when you are just speaking. If you can, watch as many singers on video or DVD as you can and watch technique. I would also watch birds in nature and see what they do in common with professional singers.

What they teach you will vary:
You will have to do voice exercises regularly
They should teach you to read music
They will check your tonality - if you can sing notes played on a piano
And tell you if you are an alto, tenor etc.

A singing teacher's duty is to teach you to sing well, this will take a lot of practice and a lot of voice exercises. Be careful not to overdo it though as you can very easily lose your voice.
As a start before seeking lessons (to save the expense), try joining a local choir in your neighborhood. It may not be the most glamorous thing but it will definitely strengthen your voice so as to take on the training a teacher will give you.
GOOD LUCK!!
