Just wondering if Physician Assistants specializing in surgery must pay for malpractice insurance out of their own pockets?

Depends on who they work for and the deal they can strike. If they work for a hospital or big corporation, they may be able to get that as part of the incentive package. Doctor's office, less likely.

A physician's assistant is not legally liable for anything and does not do surgery or any procedure on his own. I doubt he needs the insurance.
