I would have to go with the H&K MK23. Even if its a bulky pistol but can accept an awesome LAM unit and silencer. Its a reliable weapon used by the US spec ops. For something less bulky I would go with H&K USP in a 40 cal.

Okay, I love the .45 ACP. And I think it's great that the military is going back to it. But frankly, considering the higher number of women in the military as well as the reduced amount of time most soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen spend at the range, I think the .40 S&W would be a better choice due to its lower recoil, but still respectable ballistics.
As far as brand of weapon, I think anything by Glock, Colt, Springfield, Kimber, etc., would work perfectly. The last thing you need is a race gun though, something with tolerances so tight, that it'll be next to impossible to repair in the field, not to mention jamming up due to grit, dirt, and moisture on the moving parts. The tolerances need to be loose enough to allow continued functioning, but tight enough to give consistant accuracy.
I'm more of a simplistic sort of person when it comes to weapons. I hate anything that requires a battery, so while it's nice to know you can mount a light or whatever on the weapon, I like the idea of fiber-optic day/night sights, nothing requiring a watch battery.
The Sound Suppressor is a good idea, since any feature or specialty they can envision to possibly be added without modifying the arms so much that they don't correspond with the bulk of the equipment is a good idea. All it entails is a longer barrel that's threaded.

Springfield Armory XD (which means extreme duty) has multiple calibers to choose from, ie: 9mm, .40 cal., and .45 acp. I have one and would personally choose it over any glock or hk usp. The springy comes in a four inch model and a five inch tactical model. It also won pistol of the year multiple time in a row. In the .45 acp it will hold 14 rounds. It also comes with a tactical rail for your laser/flashlight combo, or you can go with an internal laser built right into the guide rod. Also comes with polished feed ramp and chamber, barrel is chrome lined as well. It is an easy pistol to maintain, shoot and clean. Like I said I would prefer an XD over a glock or usp. I actually had a usp compact and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it and i have been shooting for about 15 years. The Xd will run you about 600.00 buck or so. If you were to buy a Springfield Xd you would be making a very wise decision and investment.

I like the old .45 cal. When someone is hit with it they go down NOW. I like that if they are coming at me with malice in their hearts and weapons in their hands. But for ready training and second shot capability it has two major drawbacks. For most people it's recoil is a real factor, it kicks like a mule, and sounds like a small cannon which is really good at stunning the target but will have some effect on the shooter if they are not properly trained. Just an aside, give me three days on a firing range and I can teach your grandma to handle any long weapon used in any military force today but to aim a pistol with any degree of certainity of hitting what you aim at requires a good three weeks give or take the trainee. The mounting of a sound suppressor on a super sonic pistol would be counterproductive. Sound suppressors are not effective for any length of time or number of shots if used with hot shots and sub sonic rounds are not something I want to carry into combat. The rest you describe is all right but I have a queasy feeling everytime I hear of a ordinance department putting more and more gadgets on a weapon so it performs more roles.Often you get something like the Sheridan tank which could do a lot of things but none of them well and some of them a danger to the crew. For instance to be air dropped it had light aluminuim armour. It still sustained damage in airdrops and the armour didn't stop the enemiy rounds from coming in but it did stop them from going out. This caused a very high AP factor in it's crews.
The round I would like to see assesed for combat is the .40 S&W but I hope they get away from the 9mm Para. Fine round for civilian and ploice but in a average shooters hands( most soldiers are at best average pistol users) not a one shot killer.

My grandfather used to swear by his 1911 Colt .45 which he used in the Moro uprising in the Phillipine Islands in 1913. He was on the island of Jolo when the army was facing fanatic Moslem suicide troops, just like the crazy suicide bombers today, except they came at the american soldiers with swords and spears. Whenever they went on patrol the officers would issue everyone with .45s cause it was hard to swing your '03 in the jungle. My grandpap was with his platoon sergeant when they were attacked by 2 crazed moros, all wrapped up in white like mummies. grandpap shot one in the face and it blew half his head off. the second waited until grandpap fired five more rounds, thinking it was a six shooter, then charged, but there was one shot left and grandpap finished him off

Probably a Springfield XD40. I like the 9mm's and all, but they just don't have the stopping power of a .45 or .40.

The 1911 Colt Government Model. Eventually someone is going to figure they fixed what already works.

My preference would be a handgun based on the CZ75 (the original design). DAO, no safety, all steel, tritium sights, ambi mag release, hard rubber grips, and a nice, bead-blast dark finish.
