Greg, you are spot-on. FDR is the man. And having Eleanor didn't hurt, either. And having Winston Churchill with whom to exchange ideas, instead of whatever nabobs Bush consults with.

I knew some twenty-year-olds would say Reagan, and THEY need to be sent to the naughty corner

Washington--he defined the role for all those who followed after. The two terms, the transition of power, the interaction with the Courts and the Congress were all defined by him. He also held together various factions at the critical point of our Independence.

I respect the Lincoln and FDR picks too, they made big changes to the office that define it today. Teddy Roosevelt might be a contender too.

Reagan--really???

Can you complete this sentence: Ronald Reagan changed the Presidency more than any other President in history, before Reagan all other Presidents ____ but after Reagan did ____ the Presidency changed forever and now all Presidents _______.

Ronald Reagan hands down. You need to read up on Roosevelt. His policies caused the Great Depression to be longer and worse than it would have been. Compare and contrast his policies with what Bush did when the Clinton recession was threatening - Bush cut taxes and reduced spending and the economy turned around quickly.

Roosevelt signed wage withholding taxes into law in 1943. This burden on workers has never been lifted.

Another of Roosevelt's biggest blunders was to sign the act that started Social Security. This scheme was NOT the social program it was advertised as. It was a deliberate money grab since, due to birth rates & life expectancies of the times and reasonable projections forward, there would always be more money taken in than paid out and therefore it was a scheme to unfairly tax workers. However, it became so much more than that. With rising life expectancies and declining birth rates we face a crisis. The whole system will become bankrupt at some point. It's not a question of if, merely when. That is, unless the government enacts crippling new taxes that will destroy the economy or slashes other "entitlement" spending to the bone.

Many of Roosevelt's "New Deal" programs were collossal wastes of money and resources which are widely recognized as detrimental. Some of them survive to this day, unfortunately, because government programs, once begun, are notoriously hard to eliminate.

FDR or Washington. FDR led us through the Great Depression and WWII. And Yes I have read up on FDR, from all the programs I have read about I can't see how any of them prolonged the Great Depression. From SS to CCC, they were all programs that helped, but did not just give cash out. Washington on the other hand led this country though the difficult time of founding. He could have very well became a king, but he was honorable and left after two terms. He also warned us about become polarized about politics, which is how we are now.

Washington
Reagan
Lincoln
Bush

Read some books about FDR, and you will change your mind. Especially about Pearl Harbor.

See how he set Social Security up so that the agerage worker would pay in all their life and then die before collecting. The average life span was 56. You collect at 62. (The average man died 6 years before he could draw Social Security. It was a money maker for the govt.

FDR turned an ordinary recession into the Great Depression with the very programs that you credit for 'bringing us though'. This also set the precedent for the shift from self reliance to government reliance.
