In many areas it is actually against regulation and can cause disciplinary actions against the officer. Ive read about a cop being suspended for violating this multiple times in the newspaper awhile back.

As long as it is not against the policy of the department then yes it is. I have worked in law enforcement for almost 4 years and never saw a problem with it. Now I tried to not smoke in highly populated areas or in front of children.

Sure, why not? It's not as if it's going to prevent him from doing his job. (e.g. He's standing outside his squad car smoking and talking with another cop after a routine traffic stop. He gets a call on his radio and he's the closest one to the scene, but he says, "Eh, hold your horses--I gotta finish my smoke first!) Chances are he'd extinguish the cigarette, get in the car and leave.

I don't see why that would be a problem unless they were smoking in a nonsmoking area. Lots of people smoke while they are working. It's just that they have to do it on their breaks.

As long as he/she is not smoking in a prohibited area (indoors, beach, parks) - near me it's illegal to smoke anywhere but your own house and car it seems like. Smoking isn't illegal and as long as he/she is obeying the posted signs regarding smoking I think it's fine.

An officer should be able to smoke anywhere, and in any attire they chose. It's the friggin people who need to keep their noses to their selves.

Cigarettes? sure why not? they're legal, are they not?

It's his choice to smoke, just as it is his choice to be a cop.

Hell if they're putting their life on the line out there then let the men have their cigs if that's what they want.
