This just started. We took him to the Vet and there is no kidney stones or urinary tract infection. They sedated him and felt for his prostate which they couldn't find. The Vet said he may need neutered now and gave him a shot of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. They did drain his bladder which was very full. Anyone else have this problem?

Did they take x-rays??? A few things worry me about this-
1) they should have been able to palpate the prostate. Older intact males will get enlarged prostates which can become so large it presses on the urethra and no/ little urine can get past. It doesn't sound like this is the problem since they couldn't even find the prostate. Neutering a dog will decrease the size of the prostate over a period of time- but will not help immediately.
2) Kidney stones would not have an effect on his ability to urinate- a urinary bladder stone would. Bladder stones can be extremely small- cannot even feel them- to extremely huge- can definitely feel them. The problem with the small stones is that they can be "passed" from the bladder and get caught in the urethra- thereby blocking the flow of urine. IF THE VET DRAINED THE BLADDER using a urinary catheter- he should not have a stone lodged in the urethra. The vet would not have been able to pass it- or if he did pass it, the stone got pushed back into the bladder or came out when the catheter was removed.
3) They really should take x-rays or refer you to somewhere that can! This is one of the only ways to visualize internal organs- hands are great, but they miss a lot!
4) On the off chance that other things have happened- very rarely, a dog can damage a nerve/ veterbra that can cause problems. Usually you would see difficulty defecating- but you never know.
Good luck

At eight and not neutered I would be very worried about cancer. Most un altered males by 8 will have enlarged prostates. Neutering may not help at this time. It would remove the hormones but if he has cancer it would not stop that.
I would get a second opinion.

I would certainly seek a second opinion.. Meanwhile, this may help..I can't be certain, as there is not enough info in your question to know..but it might> http://www.handicappedpets.com/Articles/express/

If your dog is unable to pee, no matter what the reason, he will get a UTI, even if it isn't diagnosed yet..so he needs to be on antibiotics until the source of the problems is found.

my dogs never had this problem... but I wouldn't be satisfied with the "must be neutered" proposal. I would check with another vet.
it must be awful for the poor dog....good luck

Go see another vet before your dog dies.
