This was one of Luther's complaints. The Roman Catholic Church says it was established by tradition. Of course their claim is that they don't worship the statues but they kneel, cross themselves, and pray to the "saint" it represents. Question is does that constitute worship? I think it does. Statues and relics are two of the items both the Roman and Orthodox churches hold to. Protestants disagree with these practices believing they are idols. The ten commandments say not to do this, do churches get to override scripture? The Catholic Church thinks so. It seems to me that praying to a dead "saint" in itself is idolatry. The personage takes the place of Jesus as mediator which The New Testament tells us cannot be. Seems like idolatry to me. Listed below are articles from both standpoints read them and make up you own mind. If you can make fun of a religion. You have established that you most certainly don't understand what it teaches. The Bible does not have contradictions, men create contradictions from their own unbelief. (Please note I have changed some of the references today 4-20-2008 to reflect some Protestant views and some discussion of the reforming fathers. The Roman Catholic view tends to flood every internet search and not nearly as much has been said by the Protestant side. Especially when you do internet searches. Take note that almost every Church father before 500 AD had a very negative opinion of images. Many likened them to paganism.)

Hey that is a really cool question! It is just a measure of the hypocrisy that the church preaches. Contrary to the opinions of the blind who have already posted here, yes statues of anything constitute an idol. It is funny that a lot of catholic churches removed and destroyed many of their beautiful shrines of the virgin mary and other works of dubious art during the past decade or so.. it is all brainwashing the sheep at the end of the day. But I consider myself to be a tolerant loving person who does not mind discussing these issues with clear vision. I would not decry anyone to worship whatever they choose. but let us get real here with real words and real sentences..You can't beat me senseless into thinking that a statue is not an idol, Black is not white, and this chair I am sat on is not a figment of my imagination. (Ok, so Neo found out different...) Peace dude

they should not. Generally Catholic churches do but I don't consider Catholicism a true Christian religion. I was brought up the statues were there to 'remind' us but when you are taught to kiss the feet of a statue and bow before it, it boils down to nothing more than idolotry- especially when claims are made about statues crying tears, blood etc. A LOT of spiritual wieght is put on those statues.
There is no Biblical justification for statues and idols or even pictures of 'Jesus' to be displayed in a church.

when they say dont worship any idols, i think they mean dont worship other religions gods. also spend to spend time w/ God and not so obsessed w/ other thing. also, do the people @ that church actually get down on hands and knees and bow down to the statue? if they do,(which seems kinda odd) then they probably are worshiping God or Jesus (just kinda in an odd way). most people dont consider that an "idol". they just show who they're living life for.

In case you didn't read any of the Bible, Jesus is a "dude" we are permitted to worship. He is the Son of God, the Word of God, the way and the light. The statue is just a representation of our Lord to remind us of His suffering and resurrection. We don't actually worship the statue, we worship the Lord. Jesus was the Christ - hence the name "Christian".

There is a certain logic to this, but I don't know of anyone who actually worships the statue. Everyone knows that the statue represents Jesus, and Jesus is who we are really worshipping, since he's the Son of God, and God.

Because those churches are false Christianity.
Look at the example of the Israelites. While Moses was receiving the 10 commandments the Israelites made a golden calf. To justify it, they called it Jehovah and began to worship it. They believed it would help them focus their worship (just as these churches are doing). God was still really mad at them and several thousand died as a result. They don't have their heads on straight.

When you carry a photo of your significant other, is it symbolic or are you loving a photography. Historically, Idols WERE REAL! That is why if you read the bible you will find a story about food being left for a wooden and gold idol, that was actually being eaten by the priests on the sly.

What the heck is a Bible dude jesus statue?? They do worship Jesus and they even admit to it but God said he is the only God and to worship him alone. Then they say they worship Jesus because he is God but then they turn around and say Jesus is the son of God. So which is it? I would like to know wouldn't you?

Well...I suppose they can justify it because Jesus was a real man with spiritual teachings. I think what they mean is don't worship a statue like say of a monkey or something. I don't know, that's just how I perceived it.
