I have taught preschool for over 12 years and have parent ask me the same question when it comes to having their child tell about their day! It's really common for children at that age to "live in the moment." Once they transition to the next thing, they forget what happened before because now they are taking in new information.
Because so many parents in my classroom wanted to know the same things, I post everyday what we learned about in circle so the parents could ask their child question regarding that. The parents love it and say it really helps.
When your son returns from school, try and ask him more direct questions regarding his day. "Who shared today?" "Did you play on the swing or in the sandbox?" "What was for snack?...". Hopefully the school will take a class picture. It will help him to talk more about the children in his class.
When it comes to skipping over letters and numbers, many children do this. Sometimes it’s a game for them or their minds are working faster than their speech. Don’t worry about it. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Kids this age really do a lot at school including interacting with many different people and sometimes they have trouble organizing their thoughts to discribe exactly what they did all day other than simply "play". He could also be uninterested in doing the same old boring rhymes and skips a letter or number to make it more interesting. Try getting him to learn how to count by two's or practise saying the alphabet backwards. It could also be that he's doing these things simply for attention. Just wait until he hits the "Why?" phase! Everything you say will be answered with "Why?". Have fun!!

HE DOESN'T KNOW that is too broad of a question for a 4 yo to answer. Ask specifics like Did you Fave fun? Did you color anything today. How was nap time?. It is not unusual for a child to skip a number or letter. He is not acting bad. This is normal for a 4 year old. Don't scold him praise him.

He's only four and their attention span is next to none. All they want to do is play, play, play! I have boys older, alot older, and they don't even remember if they ate lunch or not or what they had for lunch!
The next time you sit him down and ask him about his day, try hinting at different things like"Did you color or eat any snacks, did you get to go outside and play?" Things like that will get him to remember certain things. You just have to work on it. I know it can get frustrating but that's what makes us great moms! The fact that we can put up with alot from our kids!
Give him time to answer, don't rush him, and he will get better at it soon enough. Make this a habit from now on so he will learn to expect it from you. The best thing for him right now are lots of hugs and alot more love!

Don't stress out about it. My 3.5 year old son does the same thing. It' s a form of "control"/test for how well they can push our buttons. I bet he laughs when you tell him that 5 doesn't come after 2, etc. Just relax. Put a big poster in his room with numbers or letters in the right order.

that's just a kid, all kids go thru that stage. I too am a mom of a little boy who just started Head Start I go through the same thing with him. I find when he is ready to tell me what he did throughout the day he will usually open up a little on the ride home.

My son does it.Today we went for his annual check up to the pediatrician office.Well he know his abc and numbers both in italian and english. The doctor asked him and he answered him: I don't know.
I think they do that if somebody ask them and they feel under pressure. That's the only thing i can think of it. Maybe they are too smart and smartass as well,LOL

I have three boys, 12, 7, and 2. They all say "I don't know" when I ask them anything. I think it is either they don't know where to start or nothing imparticular sticks out in their head. I wouldn't worry.

He's practising. My thirteen year old son has just come back from a month's holiday. I asked him how it was, and what he did, and got the answer "Fine, this and that, y'know"
