Handling classes is the best way to go, you will learn how to properly show your dog, how shows work and how to fill out an entry form. If you contact your local Kennel Club they should be able to direct you to classes.

If your dog comes from a good breeder who shows, they should be able to help you with breed-specific things like proper grooming.

My dogs love to go to shows, the get very excited when they know we are going. They love the attention, the treats and the pampering. But then, they think everyone is at the show to admire THEM.

Get involved in your local kennel club and see when the next and nearest match show is. They are like practice shows and the judges are very tolerant. Also find a local handling class. It really helps!!!!!!!
Start going to shows and watching. It can take a while to get the hang of it, but once you know what is going on, and have had a little experience, make an entry and go to the show!!!!!!

Make sure your dog is a good example of the breed. It saves a lot of embarassment!!!!!! I have seen people take their dog in the ring, be the only one in the class, and the judge gave them second because they did not feel the dog was deserving of first...OUCH!!! That would not be good!!!!!!

Really, getting a handler is not as expensive as some think!!! When you figure the travel, hotel, food, hassle, and other crap..a handler is pretty good!!! Especially since they can get the job done faster and get to more shows!!!!!!!!!!

Find a local dog show club at www.AKC.org and join a breed handling class. This is NOT the same as an obedience class taught at PETCO or another training center. You can also hire a breed handler to train and groom your dog, but that will cost you MAJOR bucks.

Go to a few shows and also some handling classes at your local kennel club. Meet some of the people in your breed.

LOL!!!
"GOGS" ain't allowed!

AKC FULL registered dogs MAY enter any AKC show(conformation!) once they are 6 mons old.LIMITED or ILP dogs may NOT enter conformation but are allowed in obedience, field trials, edog, etc.

Check
infodog.com OR akc.org to find shows in your area, contact the superindent & have em send a premium.

BTW: "jets" is a TOTAL IDIOT!! They WON'T show well if they don't LOVE IT!!! THEY ***DO***!

Depending on your breed of dog, contact the local breed club.

For example I have Great Danes and I am a member of the GDCA, Great Dane Club of America. You would need to join one of these groups, learn about the match shows that they have, ask questions. It is alot of work.
You will also need to find a dog training facility that is specific for training show dogs.
To find your club, you need to go to the AKC website.

Check out www.akc.org
They should have info available on who to contact in your area about upcomming dog shows.
There will be one person who sponsers and handles shows in the Midwest and East Coast and West Coast. Find out who that is for your area and they will have a mailing list.
Get on the list ans they will send you entries for the shows.
Decide which you want to participate in and Good Luck.
