I would interpret that quote in two different ways. One, as "life begins to be fun once you're over the hill"; or two, "you begin hurtling quickly toward death."
I like "the older the berry, the sweeter the wine."
However, know that people in their 50s don't consider themselves to be "old".

The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes.--Frank Lloyd Wright
No wise man ever wished to be younger. - Jonathan Swift

I believe your dad must have felt just like I did. I was told by all and sundry that I was over the hill but believe me, I never saw any hills, leave alone going over them!!!

over the hill generally means 40,50, or 60 years of age depending on who you are and it usually coincides with the baby boomer period....once youve reached that point it goes much faster for the rest of the ride...thats what it means

in old age your are a winner and a loser, you win because you have gained so much knowledge and experience, the way you lose is your too tired to use the knowledge and have no desire to use your experience, unless you go to the doctors for some viagra. lol.

Remind him that he can now get the senior citizens discount at some places of business. Think of all the money it will save him.
