Visit a local dog show and talk to reputable breeders. They often have affordable pet quality dogs with a "warranty", meaning the breeder has had them checked out and vaccinated. PLEASE don't go to the petstore, those dogs are not only outrageously priced, they come from puppy mills.

Good, reputable breeders don't breed mutts. If you find a maltipoo or yorkipoo or any of the other "designer dogs" - you can guarantee you are going to get scammed. They are puppy mill mutts with fake papers and many illnesses! Yeah, a few people get lucky with them, but many others don't.
Adopt a shelter dog or a rescue dog or get a purebred from a GOOD responsible breeder! Find a good breeder referral by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. This is a breed that can have hip and aggression problems - you should get the best one you can!

http://www.akc.org/breederinfo/breeder_search.cfm
You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.
http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm
The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.
Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog that is often sick and may have falsified registration papers. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_puppymills

If you don't want to be scammed, the LAST place you should be looking is the Internet. My guess is that a large percentage of Internet trafficking in puppies is from puppy mills or other scammers.
I would suggest you reconsider your options.
Here are your choices:
1. Suck it up and pay the big bucks for that cute small breed puppy from a reputable breeder. Expect to pay many hundreds of dollars. NOBODY gives away dogs that can sell to desperate people for lots of money.
2. Change your priorities and get a little bit older dog from a rescue. If you are patient and keep checking back, the right dog to come through your local rescue. If you are not patient you can contact rescue organizations that specialize in the breeds that interest you. You can go to AKC.org, search through the breed listing for the breeds you like. Almost every breed has at least one rescue assocaited with them, and some have one for each state or region.
Seriously, though. Rethink the puppy issue. Older dogs are just as loveable and you will be saving a life. Plus if they aren't already housebroken, they are soooo much easier to train.
Just don't try to make a deal over the internet. It just encourages puppymills and backyard breeders.

Try http://www.petfinder.com
There are breed-specific rescues for every breed and mix you can think of, including the small breeds. You can search online with petfinder and find a rescue who is near you. Even rescues not near you often will go to great lengths to transport the dog to you if they think you're a good fit with the dog.
Don't buy from a pet store. Ever. Don't even buy dog food from a pet store that sells puppies.
Because the small breeds are very popular, they are usually the ones to leave the shelter first. If you make friends with the shelter staff, they may be able to give you a call the next time a small dog comes in and you can run down and put dibs on it.

If you are planning a buying a new "fad mix" you are already getting scammed!!! They usually cost more than either of the two breeds they are crossed with!!! And there are no "good" breeders that would breed them!!
In many shelters, if you are a good home, they will put you on a list so when they get a little dog in, you can be called. It may be a wait.
If you get any small breed from a reputable breeder, they will be expensive...but you get what you pay for!

If you're searching for a small mixed breed contact a rescue in your area. Buying a "maltipoo" or any of the muttsforbucks breeds generally end up costing you more as they come from unethical breeders and are unhealthy puppies. If you're searching for a purebred puppy go to www.akc.org and search for breeders in your area. You may be able to find a companion quality puppy in a price range you can afford. It's always best if you can find a breeder within driving distance so that you can visit the home. Make sure you get a contract, puppy starter kit, etc.

Seriously, you will be scammed if you're going to spend any money at all on a dog like that. It's a mutt with a witty name. Nothing more.
Look into getting a Yorkie, Maltese, Bichon, or other purebred dog. Check out sites on line for breeders. They often post pictures of their dogs and have references you can call.
Don't try and get a bargain dog, because often they will have loads of health or temperment problems.

contact a rescue group. they always have dogs that need homes. Pretty much every breed has a rescue group. Go to the akc website, and then go to the home page of the breed that you want and then ask the contact person for the rescue group, if it isn't right there on the page

Any thing with yorkie, matise, or duchshound is going to be expensive.
Adopting a pet from the humane society isn't expensive, and they will eventually get a small dog in, just keep looking!
