I understand that Windows Vista will be released in Jan of 07 but I want to buy a new laptop now. Should I wait and purchase a computer with the new operating system or go ahead and buy a vista compatable model now?

To answer your question, let me take you back to the years when Windows 95, Windows 98 and finally Windows XP were released.

Windows 95 took almost 2 years to be capable enough to be used, the first version of it was not stable enough and third party developers was not ready to code in the type that Windows GUI required and it was a long time until we were able to see some quality software around written for it.

Windows 98, later, came without the USB support and several software problems which again could only be fixed after a while from the release date.

Windows XP, had to get 2 service packs and countless other updates to be "perfect". When it came for the very first time, some people had to set up dual OS systems (both XP and 98 on the same machine) just because there were no Windows XP drivers of several hardware they were using.

Looking back, what I see is that Windows Vista will have around a year or two after its release, to be perfect and without problems.

If you want a notebook, go buy. Unless you buy a low-end, Celeron system that is outdated, your laptop will not require a hardware upgrade to run Vista fast enough.

Make sure your new laptop comes with at least 1024 MB of ram and it has its own graphics chip, which does NOT share the memory with the RAM and you'll be fine.

I bought a new one myself an Inspiron 14.1 inch screen .. I like it fairly well ..but it will stay XP till it dies and somewhere in the mean time will probably buy Vista already going..

I have 98se computer that still runs good and I didn't want to fix what isn't broken so I didn't update it to XP

You need to be careful.... It's all in the verbiage and I'm not sure which is which.

Vista compatible or capable may or may not have all the necessary components you need to run Vista out of the box.

I think you need to make sure it indicates that it's Vista ready, but like I said it could be visa versa...

Good question. You should buy a computer with 64-bit processing, and one that has or is capable of upgrading to 1 GB of memory.
