It's my favorite beer(s) to order at a bar, but what beers do I need to make it at home? And what is the method to acheive a nice seperation between the light and dark beers?

the tan beer on bottom is bass....pour that about half way up a pint glass.......then take a guiness stout bottle and pour it over a spoon (curved side up) into the glass. this keeps the two beers from mixing as its poured. The guiness will float because the density of the two beers are different.

any stout and an ale really, pouring the ale over the the back of a spoon carefully will achieve some degree of visual separation, but thusfar, ive not mastered the technique

no wait i have the order wrong, i'm thinking of a black velvet

there is life beyond the best marketed brands (Guiness and Bass) though, try both a stout and ale from the Samuel Smith Brewery for example (every style they make is fantastic)

Use the Guiness Cans to float on the Bass Ale. They rock and have the right texture. You can use the convex side of a spoon to help you float if need be, hold the spoon on the surface of the Bass ale. After you master this, try other combinations like Blueberry Wheat and chocolate stout.

Guinness and Bass Pale Ale is what I use when I make a black and tan at home. It works out pretty good. Guinness is the black and Bass is the tan. Pour the Bass in first and then slowly pour the Guinness on top like others above me have already said.
