I know I've heard you shouldn't handle newborn kittens b/c the mother will abadnon them but our mommy cat keeps jumping out of the box to come see us and keeps wanting me to reach in the box where they are and pet her. I really am trying so hard to control myself and not touch them, but they're so little and I really wanna hold them. Any advice would be appreciated!

That depends on your momma cat. If she is a feral cat, then she would abandon, but it sounds like she is your pet. In that case, you can hold them whenever you want. At the vet I worked for we frequently handled newborns and it is safe, just be careful with them, as they are very delicate. If it seems to be stressing momma out, give them back.

When I have a new litter I will lightly pet them while mom is there to see how she reacts (I foster and all cats react differently) If mom is ok with it you should be able to hold them for short periods of time. I try to be sure I dont have any perfume or strong smells (like a fragrant hand soap) so the kittens don't get overwhelmed and can sniff their way back to mom when theyre hungry.

If Momma cat is alright with it & it sounds like she is. Sit by her box & gently handle the babies. She'll check them out when you put them back. Don't hold them too long, but handling them a little everyday will help make them people pets.
Petting her & them in the box is not bad either, just don't let strangers mess with them it will really upset her.

Give it a couple of days. When my cat had kittens, honestly, I waited a day. Then I took a little wash cloth and picked them up and held them. She didn't seem to mind. I think it depends on the cat also. She seems to want you to interact with them.

It's safe to hold them as soon as the mother will let you. However make it brief, you don't want to stress the kittens or the mother.
