I have taken and given voice lessons. Probably the biggest thing a voice teacher teaches is how to breathe and support your tone. 90% of singing problems can be fixed with proper breathing techniques. Another big thing is learning where to place your tone in your head and how to shape your vowels. You also work on dealing with register breaks, or "bridges," and keeping the tone consistent between registers.
Voice teachers also teach good vocal hygiene; that is, how to sing loud and well without hurting yourself. Many vocal teachers also teach some music history and language pronunciation through their lessons.
An unlike what some other answerers seem to think, ANYONE can sing. There is no such thing as being tone deaf. Some people just need to work harder to sing well.

If you want to know about voice excersises why you don't take professional voice lessons then?
For voice exercises examples buy this book: Singing for the Stars from Seth Riggs.
You can practice by your self. HOWEVER, any book or Cd cant replace a real Voice Teacher. A good voice teacher will help you in your needs. Books and Cd's are just focus on the general technique concepts.
Try a voice Teacher

Voice lessons can be incredibly helpful. Just like with any other activity there are right and wrong ways to sing. Vocal coaches can teach not only how to read the music but breath support and control, pitch control, listening skills and proper word/vowel formation all to make your voice sound better.
All of the above won't help someone who is tone deaf, but everyone else can learn to sing better from lessons. That said - very few people will have really superior voices that would lead them to recording carreers.

I have had many friends who have taken voice lessons, and teaching you the notes and scales is not their focus. What they work on is vocal quality. They teach you things like breath support, tonality, focus, vibrato, etc. One friend in particular that I remember had a very nice sounding voice and 99% perfect pitch, but it was often very fuzzy and breathy (kind of like Mariah Carey). She went to college, took a year of voice lessons, and when she came back that summer her voice was clear as a bell. She could have gone on to the Broadway musical circuit if she had wanted to.

They teach you support, which helps with a strong voice. They teach you lots of exercises that help you move up and down the scale with ease. They teach you how to breathe. They help you improve your sight reading. They teach you how to project your voice better, and how to vary the volume.
Lots of stuff.

You can either sing or you can't.. It's that simple. All voice teachers do is teach technique and other things of that sort. No one can TEACH you how to sing on key. Like I said, you can or you can't.

I disagree with "kittyrogers" A person CAN be taught to sing! How do I know? Because I used to be tone death, yet my choir teacher took the time to spend with me and I did learn to sing and carry a tune! Yes, it can be done! To this day, I can still sing. I just have to be very aware of the music and practice. There are also a lot of actors who could not sing and were taught to sing for a movie.
