It really depends on the dog. Almost any dog can be wonderful with a child as long as they are socialized at a very young age. You can do research online just type in "good dog breeds with kids" or something along those lines and you can spend hours reading personal experiences. Make sure to never leave your child alone with any dog. Contact a reputable breeder and explain your situation any good breeder will help you and place a puppy that fits your needs or will let you know if one doesnt. I also am looking for a dog with my small daughter. Its best to raise them together so a puppy can be a good idea. If you go through a rescue just make sure the dog has been around kids and get as much information as possible about its past. Some good breeds I have found are: Boston Terrier (not too small for a toddler, and not to big either, known to be good with kids, and should be kept indoors, doesnt shed much and doesnt have doggie odor). Labs or Goldens ( larger dogs, but almost always great with kids, they do however shed, and need to be exercised some). Beagles are known to be good with kids, not too big, some tend to be a little stubborn because they are a hound and follow their noses. Some will howl when left alone (my moms does). I would stay away from the toy breeds (although many can be great with little ones) a toddler can be a bit rough and some tend to be delicate and may snap when feel threntened. A lot of the larger breeds are gentle giants(newfoundland, st. bernard, great dane, german shepherd etc). Just make sure to watch that they dont accidently knock over kids with their tails. Good luck with your search.

You can not go by what breed has the best temperament or which is the best around children by breed. The breed really doesn't matter its in how the dog is brought up and the personality of the exact dog not the breed. When i was a child i was bit both by the bechon we had and the golden my aunt had. But then you take the dog i have now and she has been nothing but great around all four of my nephews from the second they came home and my daughter. She sleeps at the end of my daughters crib at night and she is a pit which everyone says are so Viscous yea right but that's something different. It really has to do with the personality of the dog then the breed.

west highland white terriers are excellent around children. I was afraid at first that she would nip at the children..but she was soo good with the kids when i babysat. I have her trained to fetch..the kids had so much fun playing fetch with the dog. She jumped a couple times but after telling her no she obeyed really well not to jump on the kids. Daisy (my westie) is right around 15 lbs and is a great indoors dog, plus a good watchdog and she is a very loyal loving little dog...i couldnt ask for a better pet. Plus, kids dont wear her out fast, shes full of energy and plays with them til they get tired of her!

Golden Retriever or Newfoundland. I had a Golden growing up and it was the most patient dog ever!! I have a Newfie now and he is a total sweetheart... I adore him. They are both amazing with kids.
That said, just because a breed is good with kids doesn't mean kids should be allowed to pull hair, tails, etc. They should always be supervised around dogs, because no matter how gentle the dog is, if a kid is hurting it, it will defend itself!

It depends on the age of the children. I have six kids and we've always had dogs. I have found the best to be border collies (or cross breed border collies), labradors and bitzers. Steer clear of ALL terriers as they tend to be snappy particularly when they get older, My favourite though has to be the Keeshond or Dutch Barge Dog. They are placid and happy go lucky little things, but do require some grooming. They love to be with their people and are always smiling.

Mini Schnauzer
Golden Retriever
I have both, and my cousins (4-8 years old) got on really well with them. My cousins even pulled my Golden around by her tail and she just lets them.
I would say that any dog would be fine, I esp like Siberians and Goldens. But the thing is to train the pups so they won't be rough to your children. When you are choosing the dog, bring the kids along and see if they get along. Only get those that are patient with the kids. =D. Hope this helps!

The absolute best in temperment is the Newfoundland. However they are HUGE.Avoid terriers and most toy dogs. They tend to be a bit nippy and small children can hurt them. I am partial to the bichon. The only down side id they need to be groomed frequently.

We had a poodle mix and she was the greatest dog around our children. She was about 20 pounds. Didn't smell like a dog or shed. Sure do miss her.
