Consistency. Action = consequence EVERY SINGLE TIME. No ifs ands or buts about it. You can do something 99 times in a row, exactly identically, and then something different the 100th time. It's the 100th time that the child will remember.

Start by setting a good example for them. Be consistent in your punishment. Don't punish them for something one time and then let it slide the next. One thing to keep in mind, too, is that every kid is different. Personality, genetics, environment all play a role. My daugther is 10 and there have only been 3 occasions where she has gotten into trouble because she just always behaves herself. I can also remember a couple of times she did something and felt so guilty and horrible afterward that we didn't need to punish her, how she felt was punishment enough. I am very fortunate to have such an amazing daughter. My brother-in-law's son is just the opposite. No matter what they try, he still gets into trouble constantly.

Depends on the child -- some children straighten up when you raise your voice to them, others will mind just by being threatened with a time out, while still others need a time-out or a spanking. With older children, grounding or taking away privileges like TV, video games, cell phones, etc., is quite effective. One effective strategy I've seen is counting. When you tell a child to do something or stop doing something and he/she doesn't listen, count to ten. If the child doesn't straighten up by ten, he/she gets a time-out or a spanking. You have to decide which is the appropriate punishment. My brother has one set-in-stone rule about spanking -- any time his son or daughter tells him "no" the result is a spanking.

Marry a military man! They will be ship shape in no time! I used an honor and award approach for my son. Some things are just kid things and they r all going to do it! My son wanted to stay up later this year during school SO I told him yes IF each morning his bed is made- all trash and candy wrappers out of room and pick up room before school other wise he can go back to an earlier bed time! Has worked great! Talk to them on their own ground- you do something for them and they will do it for you if they want it badly enough! Good luck to u

Well the way I always did it was.....your bad you are on time out. Maybe sitting on a chair or whatever. They soon start to see that if they don't do what they are told...or asked then it's a long time on the chair and they just hate it. If they get off ...put them back on for 10 minutes at a time.

Sit them in the "Naughty Chair" or Nauty anything--step, floor, rug whatever. It's the mind set of the child, if the place is called the "naughty" whatever, they're going to know that it is a bad spot to be in and if they do something bad they have to go in that spot every time. I watched Super Nanny Last night and she is a genius. You should watch it, maybe get one of her books or something.

Cause and affect, consistently when they do wrong, not hit and miss. Plus, paddling the hiney when it is called for. Learn what works for your individual child each is unique and responds differently to different forms of correction.

Take away something they really like like a fav toy, if they DON'T "mind" and let them know why they're being grounded.

With children of any age, you hvae to know how to speak to them on their level. They respond positively to respect and calm interaction just like adults do. Always say please and thank you to them, they will respond in the same manner you approach them.
