I want to know what TV looks best in HD so I can consider that in my next purchase

First, no CRT can match the resolution of an LCD, DLP or plasma TV. The poorest of these has 1280 pixels of horizontal resolution, and the best any consumer CRT can do is 1000. Besides, CRT is obsolete technology for average consumer sets and is going away.
In my opinion, the best HD picture available on any set is the Sony SXRD. It comes in sizes from 50" to 70" and is a rear-projection set using special LCD technology (LCOS). It has full REAL 1920x1080 resolution, excellent brightness and contrast. It beats anything I've seen. Next best are the new 1080p DLP rear-projectors by Mitubishi or HP. Their 1080p is simulated, however: it's really two 540p pictures shown in rapid succession. Still looks pretty good, but the picture is a little softer than the SXRD.

The standard CRT tube-type HD televisions give the best picture. Flat panels are great because they are versitile and do not take up much space but picture quality suffers as a result.

Sony has been ranked high by Consumer Report Magazine. We have one and find the picture to be very good. I would recommend going to a store that carries several brands, set them to the same station and determine for yourself which picture you like the best.

Sony comes from Japan the country that makes the best electronics. Too bad I can't afford them. Anyway try Sanyo or Zenith they are great brands also.

I have a Zenith HD and it looks pretty darn good. Its and LCD. My friend has a plasma, which I think is supposed to be better, but I think his looks awful.
