I just moved back to the United States from The Netherlands. I had to learn their native language, "Dutch" to gain citizenship over there. Why can't we do that here? Just curious.

Because then we couldn't cater to the needs of those who don't speak english. If you haven't noticed the growing population of illegal immigrants in this country that have no need to learn english. We give them jobs, pay them cash, let them drive around uninsured, and best of all they don't have to pay taxes. Now if you went to the netherlands and enjoyed all those luxuries would you ever feel the need to become a citizen or learn a new language. Can't see why you would. That is one reason why we now must press "1" to continue in english.

usa is between the few developed international locations that may no longer bilingual. everywhere in Europe, regular person-friendly human beings change easily between 2, 3, or 4 languages. BTW, all of them talk English. might take an extra 2d to press "a million" - great deal. American corporation is making an attempt to sell products & centers to all human beings. remember, your ancestors have been additionally immigrants. usa did no longer land up conversing German, Gaelic, Italian, Swedish, or one hundred different languages, however the 1st technology of those ancestors did no longer all learn English. lots of the mixing into society surpassed off for the duration of the 2d technology. See the friendly action picture "Spanglish;" it speaks volumes on your question. I do ask your self how the interior sight human beings view your question. relax - you will no longer awaken some morning with all human beings conversing Spanish - finally all human beings will combine. BTW, how do you experience approximately chinese language? The demographics of the international would have the acceptable answer.

All I can say is that this will never be resolved.

Why should our government actually set something stone (like most other countries in the world have .... ) when it's a great topic to drag out around election times and when there's a bad story for the media to focus on (i.e. Katrina, the war in Iraq, Haliburton and so on)? If I was in that group of so called leaders I'd keep this hot button alive as long as possible. It's like gay marriage, immigration, abortion - they are just too good of distractions for our elected leaders to resolve .

The United States doesn't have an official language. Yes, the vast majority of us speak English, but Congress has never done anything to make English the official language of our nation.

I'm almost positive that immigrants need to know English to become citizens of the USA. And I know that to merely live in the Netherlands, you are NOT legally required to know Dutch.

Because if they say to press 9, you may wonder why... Kidding. Anyway, I agree with you. I think U.S. is the nicest, kindest and the most mixed people country. I don't believe any other country do the same, though, including my own mother country. Why should they, right?
