Honda Civics get great gas mileage and you can find lots of them used, or new, if you're looking to go that route.

I had a Ford Escort Zx2, it was a great car on both counts, but the model was discontinued. The only reason I no longer have the car is because it was totaled in a car accident. It required little maintenance in the three years I owned it.

I like my Toyota Echo. It is small drives very well and gets 41 mpg on the highway. They stopped making them but you can probably get one used.
