I only use L'oreal. They are all great. You can go to Sally's and get the professional versions which have a wider variety of colors. I have dark hair and I have used them all. A word to the wise, dont try to go blonde if you have dark hair. It may turn orange. But there are some that are made for dark haired people, and they work great if you want a lighter brown or red. Right now I am rocking Black Leather from L'oreal Ferria. I have recieved many compliments on how shiny and pretty the color is. (Ferria is my prefered choice).

To answer this question I will assume that you are going to a professional to have this done!

As a professional stylist, the first thing that comes to mind is how was your hair before the colouring? If it is unhealthy to start then you can't expect to get a good longlasting colour.

Make sure that you are using your professional products before and after to keep your hair healthy.

Science class time: The outer layer of your hair is called the cuticle. It is "supposed" to lay flat down like shingles on a roof of a house. However, when we colour our hair we are raising those "shingles" to add the colour into our hair. If you do not close the cuticle then you will continue to loose colour and have unhealthy unshiny hair and colour. A good conditioner with a low ph (below 4.5) will help to close the cuticle and in turn stop your colour from escaping.

Try AG Tech 2 shampoo and Conditioner Light.
or
Redken color extend.

Hope I helped and didn't get too complicated!

I would go to the public beauty supply and get it there.Like a Sally's for example. Also alot of people are using 10 volume of peroxide and they always recommend it but I really think 20 volume holds better.I wouldnt use nice and easy it put like a pemanent caot or something on the hair and later down the road when you want to do something it wont work because of the nice and easy.In the salons we used to ask people if they used nice and easy before a perm because the perms didnt work over it evenly. If you color your hair with a different product after using it it may not come out even. The red tones of color are always really hard they fade faster but if you use a shampoo and conditioner thats for colored hair it should help to .Also the supply stores sell protein fillers that you can put on before you color and that makes a big difference .

Proffessional hair coloring. Go to a hair salon, they have high grade proffessional quality dye and it lasts much longer than over the counter. I havent found anything that outlasts salon coloring.

Best is a salon, but next to that I used to use Preference from Loreal. It was awesome. Make sure you are using PERMANENT color. THere are kinds that are MEANT to be washed out. You might be using a semipermanent color.
