because the question "Hi, how are you?" asks how you are and when you say your fine your saying your ok w/ everything going on right then. fine isn't really an emotion but your saying nothings wrong in other words. And when you say I'm cool it's the same thing cause it would be rude to just walk away and say nothing or to ignore them and say uh, or yes or no having no clue what the question is.

"How are you?" is the standard question in some places, and "Fine" or some variation is the standard reply. In Sarawak 30 years ago the standard greeting was "Where are you going?" The standard answer was "town", "my farm", "home" or "school". Asking someone about the state of his internal organs was considered somewhat impolite. Different places have different rules.
It is a social script, as another poster said. It means "I recognize you", and "Fine" means "Thank you for recognizing me." If you see a friend with a cast on his leg, you say "No, really - what happened?" to mean "I am concerned and I have the time to talk".
If you gave a complete description of your health, together with your opinion on the quality of medicine and medical insurance in today;s world, every time people asked you "How are you?", you'd notice your former friends backing away from you slowly.

These things are social scripts.
If you had to think it out, you might answer with a long story about how your dog bit a cop, and you had to spend a half a week in jail while they shot your dog even thought the cop kicked him and then your power switched off so all the stuff in the fridge went moldy and blah blah blah.
I'm cool.

I say I'm fine. I could explain that it's a rotten miserable black day in hell but I would rather not discuss it.

People always say that because "Hi, how are you?" is almost never a sincere inquiry into your condition, it is a greeting.

"How are you?" is a greeting. The asker don't want 3 hours of problem dumping. The response is just a response to the greeting.

i think it's cause it's a conditioned response and some people would rather hear "i'm fine" than "pretty shitty, first of all............"
