Gather up your vacuum sweeper, broom, cleaning cloths and paper towel, cleaning supplies, trash bags and an empty laundry basket.
Start in one room. Wandering around only makes you frustrated and makes the mess worse. Start gathering up stuff that doesn't belong in that room and put it in the empty laundry basket; if it gets filled up go get another one. Don't run around redistributing that stuff or you'll defeat your purpose of cleaning one room at a time.
Start a rummage sale-give it away-throw it away box. Rule of thumb--IF YOU HAVEN'T NEEDED IT OR TOUCHED IT OR THOUGHT ABOUT IT IN SIX MONTHS--YOU PROBABLY DON'T NEED IT THEN RUMMAGE IT-GIVE IT OR TOSS IT.
If you do this clearing up and cleaning up one room at a time you'll save time, you won't get discouraged, and at the end of the day you'll have one clean room instead of five rooms only partially done and the whole big deal to look at in the morning.
And the first rule I have is~~Wash the dishes before you start a big cleaning job. I absolutely despise getting a big cleaning job done only to find that the sink is full of dirty dishes and I still have to cook.
Good luck.

You need to set up separate boxes of each type of thing you own and pull everything out of one room, separate it by type in the next room, throw away anything you have not used in the last 6 months. Then once you get the cluttered room empty, add some shelves, baskets, or other storage items and bring back everything you are keeping, only place it in the room in an organized fashion. Keep doing room by room until your place is not cluttered.

You don't say what kind of clutter. If its too many whatnots around, give them away to friends, or have a garage sale, or a consignment shop, or good will. As for clothing, go through your closets, throw out or sell or giveaway anything you have not worn in the last 3 years, as you won't, even if your size changes, so does the styles.

Get a friend or relative to help you sort through it. Make 3 piles: keep, sell or toss. The keep pile should be the smallest. Anything you haven't used in the past year needs to go. Be ruthless. You will never miss the stuff and you will feel so much better once it's gone.

i tend to have the same problem....pack-rat syndrome. you justt need to get in the habit of throwing away things you know you dont need or dont use....or jsut flat out ugly. i'm a pretty sentimental person so its hard for me to get rid of stuff. once i do i feel better. i've decided taht memories are better kept in the mind than in my way. you will feel so relieved once you get rid of it. if you absolutely cant part with it, fid some good storage places in your house and put your things in boxes. those plastic ones are really good. the cardboard can be damaged with water or animals. good luck and good ridence to all your clutter!

Yes, go to a Big Box Store, and get yourself some of those plastic containers that hold 5 gallons, and then you can put your "stuff" in there and store it in the basement.

This way, water and moisture wont bother the "stuff", and rats and other vermin wont get into it either.

I wish you well..
