It depends on whether or not you get it done correctly – perking guns are commonly used but this is not actual piercing, they are also inaccurate and most importantly very unsafe – if you are planning on getting your ears pierced then please get it done professionally by someone who is trained and uses clean appropriate equipment.

Self-piercing is stupid, to put this very bluntly, no one would try to do their own surgery, and no one who has common sense would do their own piercings unless they were previously trained. Those who pierce professionally are not just people who put holes in people; they not only know how to position the piercing correctly but are also trained in what to do if it goes wrong as well as basics of blood pathology. As well as this they work within clean environments with the correct equipment, their studios should resemble a hospital room and so are far cleaner and better equipped than a random idiot poking holes through themselves.

With that out of the way...

Actual piercing – i.e. needle through the flesh – they normally numb the area beforehand; there is a sharp pain for a second and normally after this the pain eases up. I would say around a 3 on the pain scale.

With guns – i.e. shooting blunt metal through the flesh – it is more painful because it is damaging the flesh, it also means it takes longer to heal and because they use the wrong type of jewellery you can get allergic reactions as well as bad infections from the piercing gun itself. I would say around 4 on the pain scale.

The further up the ear the more painful it becomes due to cartilage being tougher than the skin on the ear lobes themselves at the bottom, so the very top of the ear or the tragus are more painful – I'd rate at around 6.

Then I do have a low pain threshold and when I had the bottom of my ears done it was when I was little because my mother was ignorant about the risks so did not know how much risk she was exposing me to by getting my ears pierced with a gun.

Depends how it's done and how you treat them after.

Not sure if they still use the hole punch things but that was how I had mine done and the pain was about 1 and gone in a second.

I believe the needle and potato method is more painful and ice helps but freezing your ears is painful in itself.

You need to look after them very carefully - not mess about with the studs - clean them with alcohol or disinfectant twice a day - and not take the studs out for about a month. If you use hair products then keep your hair away from them too. Then keep earrings in them or they'll start to close up. Drink lots of water to help fight infections.

Sorry, probably more info than you need but we don't want you to get nasty infections do we?

Hi, i dont know so much now as then it use to be done with a gun and the pain scale i would say was a 1, as it only hurts afterwards for 1 second, but then it goes of, but ive heard now they do it with a needle as its more sterile and doesnt nip, so i dont know weather they freeze it or the just push it through,

1(pinch)-10(surgery with out anesthetic)

It depends what stated (of mind and body, not state as in a state in the united states) you are in

If you are drunk, you want even remember getting it,
(same is true if you are a new born)

If you are a in a normal state of mind it’s about a 1 to 3 depending how sensitive you are.

If you are supper sensitive or really scared and nerves it can be a 4-5

In summer: if I had to pick between a root cannel and an ear piercing… I’d be shopping for earrings!
