My dog is a teacup maltese, and she is REALLY scared of walking on our wooden floors. I mean she walks fine on our carpets. But she is so scared of walking on the wooden floors that she can't even go to her food and water! We thought she was scared because it was slippery, so we cut her nail as short as we can... but she was still scared. Since she can't walk on the wooden floors, she mostly stays on our couch, or lies down, and doesn't move. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY DOG? And what can I do to help her walk?? PLEASE answer with SERIOUS questions!

ok... people are saying give my dog treats on the floor.. but my dog only looks at them and doesn't even try to go there.. and also, people are saying you should put her on the floor, and she'll get used to it... i tried that for a week, and all she does is stay still, then rum to a safe place. oh yea i forgot to say,, she CAN walk on wooden floors, but only in several places. like she can walk around where the dining table is, and where the couch is and on the kitchen floor (which btw is all wooden floor). But she can't walk in my room, the hallyways, and the bathroom. It's weird...

Be sure her hair no the bottom of her pads is cut even with the pads as this is the major cause of a dog to slide. when she is on the wood floor do not baby her if she is scared as this just reinforces this action from her. It is best to ignore her and give her praise when she acts not afraid.
Good luck

Get some inexpensive rugs or mats with rubber backing and make a path for her to follow on the floor. This will at least get her into other areas of the home and she will be surrounded by wood.

Sit on the wood floor and hold her in your lap. Give her treats and use a happy tone to talk to her. Occasionally place her on the floor and give her even better treats. When she is comfortable standing on the floor, move a foot or two away and encourage her to come to you - use treats, a favorite toy, clap, act like you're having a grand time. Lots of praise when she comes to you. Gradually increase the distance she must come to you. Likely, once she comes to you from a few feet away she will shortly be running all over the place.

I mean, wow, that is odd. Did you take her to the vet? Is she a rescue dog that came from a bad home where there was wooden floors in them? I mean, there must be a reason to why she is afraid. I would take her to the vet and they can actually get a trained specialist for the behavoir problems for dogs and cats and other animals. I am sorry I can't think of anything else for you but I hope what I suggested will help you out.

what kind of dog is she?
have you known her since she was a pup??
maybe she had a bad owner previously, and has something to do with wooden floors. just sit on the wooden floor and beckon her over and keep moving farther and farther onto the floor. then give her her food, and keep telling her she's a good dog, and make sure to use the new name that you picked out for her. (if she DID have a bad owner previously)..or otherwise she might not like the noise it makes, or maybe it hurts her paws. she could have a thorn in her paw? or her paws are very sensitive. maybe you should get that checked out.

She is most likely afraid because it is slippery. Her feet and legs probally do slide around on the wood floors although you might not notice it much. My chocolate lab used to be the exact same way. It just takes time until they feel comfortable enough to walk on that type of flooring. Try to coax it with a treat every now and then into the room with those floors. just don't try to force it to walk on it. It will be more afraid, and harder for it to overcome it.

it may be slippery for her. I know my cat stays away from the hardwood in our dining room b/c her back feet slide when she walks. IF they are shiny floors, it may be her reflection that is scaring her also (as in there is another dog by her food/water and not that she is ugly). Try getting some carpeted runners that go from where the wood starts to her food/water dishes - or just some area rugs. Good luck! :)

well she is scared of the floor. She sounds to not like the texture of the slippery floor. Maybe she dont like the glare the floor gives. Put a rug across the floor or get carpet or even a smill strip of carpet to her food. I feel bad. That or move the food bowl so she can get to it. best of luck

pl try to walk a dog on the floor as reffered by u,by holding the dog neckstring in ur hand ask the dog to follow, once the fear goes he will wolk on the wooden floor.
there was no need to remove the claws as it helps in gripping the floor,
if the dog is small enough this is applied.

Has your dog had a bad experience on the wooden floors? Did she ever fall or slip on them? You might be able to help your dog go on the floors if you lay out her favorite treats on them.

Lots of dogs are afraid to walk on linoleum and hard wood floors. I am not quite sure why. We once had a dog the same way, and we just put his food and water in the living room. Sorry, I can't help, but at least you know it's not just your dog....

Good Luck!
