I went through Parris Island Marine boot camp in 1966 and I did detect this "homophobia". I didn't even then know that homosexuality existed. But some Marines just wanted to beat up homos if they encountered them. I think it was because they thought it somehow proved their own masculinity and straight orientations.
They were unaware, for instance, that one of history's greatest military leaders, Alexander the Great, was either gay or practised homosexual relations while he was on operation. He was subsequently admired by all as an exemplary leader and military tactician.
I think the main reason some people "hate" gays is that they just don't understand it, it confuses them and they project this as hatred to impress their peers. But this is just ignorance and can be overcome by education and understanding.

Sexuality is so personal. The unknown is most feared. All of these military groups feed off of recruiting individuals who will need to set their fear aside to be indoctrinated into a psychology of fight, not flight. Which means many come in with bigotry & anger. These sort don't understand different types of beliefs/cultures/individuality of any type, so sexuality is way off their radar! Heading into a world of Strength, Might, Right, & even Bulling to win the Fight can not allow softness & understanding into their world. Sadly, religion plays a huge part in bigotry towards homosexuality. When you're taught none acceptance of it, you become brainwashed to believe it is ok to hate it & worse, act upon your hate. However, it's nice to know that some individuals hold the belief that Loving thy neighbour means accepting them, &/or tolerance, also to do on to other as you would have them do on to you. There's many in the military with these beliefs, & their conscience speaks to them everyday when an injustice occurs toward those who society deems different. Hang in there... the meek shall inherit the earth & right eventually wins over evil. There are lessons for us all to learn... this is your path, & that is theirs.

In my personal experience, more people outside the military and a few homophobic soldiers and officers in the military make more of a deal about this than anyone else.

Having been a soldier myself (Infantry) I have no problems with homos in the military. As a matter of fact, I've met a few admitted homo Infantrymen both in regular Army/Marine Infantry, Army Spec.Ops. and Marine Recon Units and I admire them. They are even embraced by their straight brethren. Because we believe that they took the initiative to fight off the bad guys that them others whimped out of.

To begin with, you're probably not going to find any of those people on the YA site.
Secondly, they do what they are ordered to do. The people who make these decisions do what they think is best for the military, its not a popularity contest.
I wonder if someone who uses the expression "hate on us" is old enough to be in the military, anyhow.

Because you don't join the military to show your homosexuality. And if that is first on your mind instead of keeping your bud's alive or yourself alive it isn't smart. Besides, if you just keep it to yourself then you never would have this going on about gays in the military. Stop annoucing it and you won't face problems.

Gays are not needed in the military. We have enough straight people to do the work. Just keep it to yourself if you are gay. No one needs to know.
