3 weeks ago i had my 8month old labrador pup neutered, and for the last week she has stayed with my mother whilst i was on holiday. After returning home and collecting my little pup, she has calmed down a lot and when see's other dogs almost crawls up to them. She always did that a little bit, but then would jump over other dogs like mad, now she just stays lowered to them and doesn't join in and play. I expected her to calm down after the operation but i'm worried that her behaviour change is exccessive. My mum told me that my brother in law was playin with her and she yelped quite loud at one point, but more over him taking her by suprise. Since then she acts the same way with him as she now does with other dogs.... maybe that has something to do with it, but what was, a week ago such a loved dog, now seem shy and lackin confidence, can anyone help????

Thanks for any advice in advance!!!

Drew.

Dogs go through weird periods well up to a year in age. Combine that with the surgery and being away from you, she's a little confused. Give her some time, but don't reward the submissive behavior either. After a female is neutered, it's a good 2 weeks before that incision is fully healed. Make sure the incision isn't infected.

Most dogs experience a fear period during adolescence. Things that previously didn't affect them are suddenly scary and suspicious. Use a happy tone when you see dogs and encourage her to make friends. If she does, be enthusiastic and give her lots of praise. If she doesn't want to make friends, don't force her as that could make the problem worse, but don't coddle her either. Just shrug and go on your way. As long as she has a number of positive experiences in the near future with dogs, she should be back to her old self soon.

Drew, I'm not sure. I've never had a dog react this way to being spayed. You might want to talk to your vet and see if he might want to check her out just to make sure there's not something going on that you don't know about. Good luck to both of you.

Your dog needs to be socialized around other dogs and people. socialization is very important for puppies. she should come out of her fearfullness if you get her out. a dog obedience class is an excellent way to get her around other dogs and people.
Good luck

Maybe she's just dazed and confused from being neutered ... most females are spayed.
