We have a 1 year old female cat and just recently brought home a 3 year old male cat and they aren't getting along. My female cat is not very happy with the new cat in her home. Will they ever get along and what do you suggest I do?? I can't stand keeping one locked in a room but they keep hissing at each other and want to fight.

Try making a barrier of glass or screen (something they can see through). Put their food dishes on either side of it and send them to eat. They will get quite upset initially, thinking the other cat is trying to get to their food. After a bit they will realize that they are protected and the only way to eat is to ignore the other cat.

Also try trading their beds periodically so they get used to the smell of the other cat.

Make sure you are still giving your old cat just as much love and attention so she doesn't feel like the new cat is stealing you away.

Go to the spirit essences portion of Dr. Jean Hovfe website: www.littlebigcat.com. She also has an article in the article library, "Cat to Cat Introductions". Dr. Hovfe is a veterinarian and works with a cat behaviorist, Jackson Galaxy.

The essences are really effective and easy to use. You just put them on the fur between the cats ears. There is a good description there of what you might use the various essences for. The essences are mailed to you for $16.95, no shipping, no handling or tax. Instructions for use come with the bottle.

You will not find anything better at that price and I heartily endorsed their use. They cannot harm the cats in any way and as they are not drugs you treat a little more often than just giving a pill.

They are just getting to know one another, I would watch them closely when they are together, but don't over react, they will sense this, and you could end up with a scrap, but they should do fine.

Chances are your Female Cat will be the dominant one, mine was anyway, you didn't say whether or not the Male cat was neutered, may be a good idea, even if the female is or not.

There is a 4 yr difference b/tw my male and female. When I brought my female home I let her walk around, check things out. My male kind of just watched and moaned or growled if she came too close. During the course of a few weeks I watched them closely, he would swat at her if she came too close and still hiss but eventually he got used to her and stopped. Personality of both cats makes a big difference, my male is quiet and calm and the female is wild and goofy.

They will grow to tolerate each other over time. I suggest putting the new cat in a carrier (pet taxi) for awhile in an area where cat #1 travels by frequently and let them get over the initial dislike of one another. Cats will usually avoid each other for the most part when they can until one or both are comfortable with one another.

Start them out in seprate rooms and let them disciover each other slowly...they will grow slowly together don't rush either cat or force them together.. keep a crate in one room and let the other cat disconer things...after all they are very curious animals. however keep in mind the male is going to spray when he finds out that the female is there... watch them closely and it will be no time before you hear them chasing each other through the house

You keep them in the same room as long as it takes for them to understand the other one isn't going away.

if they want to fight then u hav to yell at them...try and get them to get along...u could try leting them in two seperate cages, but put the cages together so they still see each other, but they won't fight...then like the next day try letting them free to see any improvement...if not, then repeat the procedures

Let them get use to eachother..just make sure the big one doesn't claw at the little one, or the little one gets fiesty..make sure its in a room that they both feel safe in..(no loud noises)
and pet them both at the same time, to make them feel like they're equal to eachother? hope it works out!
