Really, do not bother taking him to the vet - waste of time and money.
I did this and was just simply told that it is pigmentation. Since that time she has had another smaller black dot appear on her tongue so it is really nothing to worry about - plus i was charged £25.00 for the privilage of being told this!
The way I look at it is, you can always find your dog in a crowd of the same breed!

I would say it is just a mole and to just keep an eye on it to see if it changes shape or color. If it does then definately take him. If you have the xtra money and don't want to wait take him to the vet now just to be safe.

Its suppose to prove they are purebreed I think. Chows, Labadors, Alaskian Malamute, and Eskimo Spits all have black spots. What I am talking about looks like ink stains.

It's perfectly normal for your Golden to have a black spot on his tongue. It simply means he has extra pigment. To reassure yourself go to www.woodhavenlabs.com

I know someone told me once that my flat coat/akita was chow and I freaked they said his whole tongue is black. I looked and sure enough, then I noticed his teeth were black too. He had eaten a pen. Then people wonder why I like adult dogs and not puppies.

Some purebreds have a different coloured tounge or has a distinct mark. Check it out at the vet.

Spots on the tongue usually indicate that the dog is a purebreed. Some purebreed dogs even have spots on the roofs of their mouths and gums

Since he's not always had it you should get him checked out ASAP, that is pretty big.
Hopefully it's nothing to worry about though, freckles and moles etc do appear as age creeps in.

dogs can havè or develop spot anywhere. Its sounds to me like there is nothing wrong. If you are still feeling concerned you can ask your vet, just to be sure.
