Okay here is the situation. My Dog is usually with my ex 24/7, on the job site running around (he is a carpenter). She was spayed bout two weeks ago and there were some complications. So she had to stay home. The last couple days she was home she began to rip up our brand new carpet. She ate the under carpet I cleaned up what I could but she wont stop. Any Ideas on why she would do this. Is she mad at us, for leaving her home? Do not know what to make of it. I want her to stop! Please help.

Sounds like your dog is still chewing from puppyhood. There are sprays you can buy at petstores, such as Bitter Apple, that may help. The best option for you though is to get a crate so that your dog is not left unnattended. Your dog should quit this behavior fairly soon, probably over the next 6 months. Hang in there and the problem will resolve itself over time. It is not a vitamin deficiency or anything complicated. Your dog is simply enjoying pulling the fray from the carpet and chewing, possibly out of boredom. Get some chew toys to keep her time better occupied.

When a BIG dog is chewing up your home, you can't just let that go. You can crate the dog when you have to be gone but can only leave the dog 2 or 3 hours or so. You can buy a muzzle in a health food store, but it should be fitted to the dog because the dog should be able to drink with the muzzle on.
The dog that destroys your home is angry and punishing you for leaving her home alone. To some dogs you can say, "I have to go out in the car. I am giving you 2 dog bisquits (or one!) while Im gone; you mind the house."
This can work. Ripping up a brand new carpet is an outrage. I would crate her or muzzle her or put her out.

My next door neighbor had the same problem with her Shephard Mix.

Part of the problem is boredom. You've probably been taking it easy on her since she had the surgery so that she can heal, right?

If you don't play with her so that she can use her energy, make sure she has a few fun, textured, dense things to chew on.

Your problem can be resolved by spraying the seams of the carpet with Bitter Yuck (aka. Bitter Apple). Make sure you spray it every couple of days to keep the scent fresh. It will not harm your dog.

And, when you see your dog approach that area when you are at home, tell her NO and reinforce her behaviour by giving her something that is appropriate for her to chew on.

Separation anxiety can make dogs become distructive if they are stressed, lonely or bored. Crate training works well, however you must be careful that the dog will not hurt itself in the crate. Our dog would get mad when we left and destroy the house. We moved her to the garage, however she was so angry she started peeing all over her bed in the garage and in her kennel where she sleeps. We got a crate for her and I placed a smaller bed in a waterproof pillow cover and put a flannel pillowcase over it. The joke was on her, we never got mad when we came home to find a mess. Eventually she adjusted by us taking small trips and returining home (never to give attention before leaving or coming home) Once she calmed down we would let her out of the crate when we wanted to. If it is a short term living situation, I would look for a place to keep her where she can't destroy things and provide her with plenty of toys. Walk her frequently or play with her to tire her out before your leave. Good luck =-)

First, if you don't have one, go out and buy your dog a crate. Dogs are like babies, if you can't watch them and keep them safe, you need to put them in a safe place when they can't be supervised.

Also, I would call your Vet to have her checked out to be sure that foam under your carpet isn't blocking anything. Dogs can chew things for many reasons, separation anxiety and boredom are to name just a few.

Sounds like she is anxious about being left alone, is lonely and bored. Dogs get destructive when bored or anxious. Spray Bitter Apple on the carpet and don't get any on yourself....lol It definitely tastes nasty...lol Crate her if you need to while you're gone and make sure you spend a lot of time with her while you're at home to reassure her...even your ex coming and spending time with her should help...she could really be missing him!!!

Some dogs whine( like mine does ) or bark or destroy things when lonely....leave the TV going so she hears human voices. Leave lots of toys for her to play with. And lots of love when you get home.

You did not indicate Breed of dog; it Is important to keep outdoor breeds outside when you are absent. Even small indoor breeds dig to get out! this is equivalent to tearing up carpet! toys can help the feeling of boredom and loneliness. Good chew toys for young developing teeth!
