He is a puppy though. Possibly a few months old. I've been trying the puppy pad method since I live in an apartment and I'm not supposed to have pets. I can't take him outside except at night. But he is ruining the carpet and still not using the pad. Everyone says we should've had him trained by now since we've had him a month. What can I do? Is a crate the only way? And if so, I'm home 99% of the time with him so when should I put him in there? And how can I persuade him to use the pad? Please help!

If you are training him to use pads you don't have to be quite so regimented about a schedule, but you must watch him religiously. If you can't keep an eye on him, place him in the crate. Take him to the pad (on leash, if necessary) when you see signs that he needs to eliminate (circling, sniffing the floor intensely, suddenly wandering away, sniffing his rear, etc.). Praise him and give him a treat when he uses the pad. If you see him starting to eliminate, clap your hands or make a noise to interupt him, then take him to the pad. If you find an accident but didn't see him doing it, don't scold him. He won't know why you are upset.

Use an enzymatic cleaner to clean the carpet. This should help to prevent him from returning to areas because his scent is there.

Most dogs are not housetrained until they are at least 7 months old - and that is pushing it. Your pup is not behind!

Ok this has happened to me with my puppy Pomerian before. I called the vet and they gave me a Purina training video to watch. The video stated that you have to be consistant with training. Take your dog out many times a day at the same time. THIS IS IMPORTANT! I got up and took mine out at 6am (even on my days off of work and I wanted to sleep late) and again around 11:30am and several times after that. It also stated to buy a crate to keep your puppy in because dogs will NOT use the bathroom where they sleep. Keep the crate near you or near people when they are at home so he will feel apart of the group. It worked wonderfully with my puppy. He is so well trained now. I bought a metal crate at Walmart for about $35 bucks. Good luck!

if you want to train your puppy it is best if you wait till it gets older for now you can go to your local petsmart orpet supermarket, and buy puppy diaper thats how i trained my dog then later i used the pads and this worked perfectly.
