A full format may be a little much. If you aren't running into serious problems, I would not format it. Run a defrag and a Cleanup wizard. If you are so inclined, run the Cleanup processes on your own so you have a little more control.

No, not really. That could actually be bad for the hard disk, as you are making it work really hard. Also, in the case you were to lose power during the format, your hard disk could be irreparably damaged.

One of the best ways to protect your computer is to scan for viruses and spyware. While I would recommend Symantec products, Panda Software has a great virus scanner and spyware detector that is available online for free (the only catch is, they'll send you promotional emails from time to time).

The other way to really protect your computer--or more importantly, your data--is to make regular backups either on a CD or a DVD. DVDs can hold several gigabytes of information and can easily contain your large files, such as video files and/or MP3 collections.

Hope this helps!

It is not necessary. But i do it once a year to help remove any old software bits that are not removed with uninstallers as well as to clean up any left overs from internet or files I have created or downloaded. It does make the machine run smoother for a while until I start loading more and more stuff back on it again.

im assuming youre using a windows machine. in that case, no, it isnt necessary. between half-uninstalled programs, a fragmented hard drive, and spyware/viruses, its all fixable without a format
