Don't do pastels..Why does everyone have to have pastels at a wedding. YUCK!

You could always go for the light colour and the bridesmaid wearing a deeper shade of same. Then bring in extra colour with accessories.

Adopting this option would produce a better affect than choosing completely different colours - unless of course you have several bridesmaids and dress them in rainbow colours. Saw a wedding where the bride had done this, and although it sounds strange, it really did look pretty.

What season?
spring wedding pinks and cremes
summer yellows and greens ...pastels
fall tan /champaigne and that pale burnt orange that i see alot of now
winter blues and purples
provided that you are not talking about that heavey material that most wedding attire is made out of ....uuugh
think clean crisp simple lines for these colors to work properly

champagne and pink go very well together.
If the bride is wearing an ivory colored dress some great accent colors are light blue and celedon green
