Oh, this is SO GREAT! You are in your 50's and getting married! I am JAZZED for you! Happy, happy, happy! Congratulations!
I have a good friend who got married in December - she was much younger, but a lot of what she had in mind can be applied. Why are you having a home wedding ? Why not go ahead and have one in a small chapel ? Or even a small vestuary in a church ? You could decorate it in Poinsettia and evergreen and then leave it for the church to use in their own services.
Nonetheless, whatever you choose, you have no need to decorate in any over-the-top way, especially if you have your wedding ceremony in your home with family and friends. You can still set aside a room and decorate it just for your ceremony. How about having it in the evening and use all white candles in evergreens ? And use Poinsettias as your bouquet ? (Make sure the photographer knows about the low light !)
There are some lovely dresses out. Look at Mother-in Law and evening dresses for your choices. (I provided some links - I am going to use the second one for my wedding ! Also in my 50's!)
No need to have a dinner - but have "heavy hor de overs" so that the champagne or wine has something to rest upon and you don't end up with drunk guests. Besides, if they don't have dinner, they will be hungry. You can even hire a small caterer who will bring 1-2 servers who could make sure the food is out and also circulate amongst your guests to also ensure everybody gets enough to eat - that will keep you (and your guests) out of the kitchen - as it should be.
I am very excited for you! Good luck and good future!

That could work, however you might want to try hosting the wedding in a different area and just having everyone stand. The same could go of the reception after or you could just rent chairs and place them against the wall and set up some banquet tables for food and drinks. This way people will be more willing to mingle with each other and you won't be running around the room trying to greet everyone. You can let them come to you. If you do decide to have everyone stand you should be slightly elevated so everyone can see you, a small stage or steps would be perfect. Also, instead of the traditional red for a christmas wedding try silver and blue.

I'm getting married in December. Not a Christmas wedding, but still there is the idea of "winter" in the theme. My bridesmaids are wearing red (apple) and I'm wearing an ivory dress with red accents. I will be carrying red flowers with crystal snowflakes. My bridesmaids will be carrying cream colored flowers.
For my centerpieces, I'm going cheap. I'm filling up rose bowls from Michael's with fresh cranberries and putting in cream colored pillar candles.
We're also getting married at my parent's home. Use the decorations you already use for Christmas as decorations. My mom is going to do a whole tree in crystal snowflakes. I think that will be an awesome place to take pictures in front of.
If you do favors, you might mix a CD of Christmas songs or decide to give everyone an ornament.

Use your favorite Christmas color scheme, whatever that may be. As far as decor, I would just decorate like you normally would for the holidays since it will be held in your home.
For attire, wear whatever you like.
Do you prefer a full dinner, just desserts, or finger foods? If you go the full dinner route, definitely look into hiring a chef to come in and cook. You can find them online nearly anywhere. Desserts are fairly simple to DIY or buy from a local bakery. Finger foods can be purchased from the frozen section of Costco/Sam's and are hearty enough that you can make a full meal out of them if you wanted. Serve cider, cocoa, coffee.
Use Christmas cds/tapes that you already own (or go out and buy new ones if you wish) as background music.

Christmas weddings are beautiful. The Christmas wedding I went to was red, white, green and gold and it was gorgeous. Since you are planning on home wedding, you will not need a lot of decorations. If you are planning on having a Christmas tree, you can place your wedding favors on the tree and your guest will be able to retrieve it (favors) from the tree. The guest can also place their gifts under the tree. Poinsettias can be great table centerpieces also. Below are a few photos to give you a few ideas. Congratulations.

We're having a Christmassy wedding. Our bouquets and other floral decorations have holly and berries in them. Instead of a floral arrangement on the head table, we have an evergreen garland along the front of it. Our attendants are wearing dark red, and our cake will probably have red accents.

I think if I got married at Christmas I would have the attendants in dark red and pink velvet gowns. A marzipan cake and take advantage of the season for my theme. By a magazine about brides and type in weddings into the computer and hit search. There are thousands of ideas and sites.

I would do real elegant Christmas color's.like green, gold and a cranberry red not a real red like crimson red.I think those colors would look good for a Christmas wedding.as far as food I'd make some simple finger sandwiches and punch. you could decorate with bells, wreaths, and little sleighs. good luck and best wishes

have the invitations in a theme such as wreaths and berries, the decor can have decorated christmas trees and small wreaths as napkin holders , red/green/gold/silver outfits for the wedding party. have personalized ornaments as place holders, have jars filled with pine needles and pine cones with holly berries as centerpieces. contact me for more details as there are too many to type here.

Congrats!
If you do not want to go the traditional route of green and red, try using a snow/ice theme.
Shades of blue, silver and white or ivory combined together.
Using white poinsettias, with blue and silver ribbon. Blue, white and silver candles to decorate tables or even glass bowls with floating candles of the same colors.
