In a couple of years or so, I will undergo jaw surgery to correct my underbite, which I've had since I was a kid (the retainer didn't work).

Will it be painful afterward? I need the surgery because sometimes I get a little bit of pain near where my jaw connects to my skull (sometimes it's uncomfortable just letting my upper jaw sit in place). Plus, I don't want to look like Jay Leno forever and my ORTHO said that if I didn't get it while I'm young, it would screw up my teeth when I'm much older.

I underwent top jaw surgery for my underbite 4 weeks ago, and I must say, it is the best thing I ever did. I had retainers before it, and they didnt help. I have braces now, and did have them before the surgery.

I felt no pain during or after surgery (novicane helps tremendously), just nausea from the anesthetic, which was soothed by a liquid perscribed med.

It made me much more confident and I feel amazing! My smile is nearly perfect, and my braces come off soon. My jaw is fully fuctional now, and I'm able to eat anything with ease.

Your ortho is right too, its much better to get the surgery while you're young. It will speed the recovery, and it will prep easier for life after the surgery

Good luck, I hope it works out for you!

I turned down this kind of surgery twenty years ago and got a splint to wear at night instead, which solved the problem. There are risks to the surgery I wanted to avoid, such as permanent lip numbness from cutting through the nerve in your jaw. I would get a second opinion. If you're upset with your looks, that's another issue. If the cost is not a factor (it was for me), the surgery might be worth it for the self-esteem. I was told that I would have pain bad enough to have to stay in the hospital for three days and have my jaw wired shut for 6 weeks, but that may have improved since. Good luck with your decision.

No of course it won't screw up your teeth. Technology has advanced so much from many years ago. My daughter had jaw surgery where they moved her upper jaw forward and her smile is totally amazing. She said that it really didn't hurt as your jaw goes temporarily numb and by the time the feeling returns your totally healed. She told me she would do it again in a heart beat since the results are totally fabulous. One needs braces first before you can have this surgery. They go hand in hand.
