If it's Stephen, can it be shortened to Steve? Where do they originate from?

Yes they are pronounced the same.

Yeah, they're both pronounced the same - assuming that they are American. Usually, it's more of an Italian or Greek name, I think and the proununciations do vary occassionally. But if it is Stephen, yeah, it can be shortened to Steve.

My oldest son is a Steven. The first Christian martyr in the bible was a Stephen. My friend is a Stephen who is called Steve! LOL Guess it don't matter!

they both can be shortened to Steve, as for the diff spellings its just a matter of preference. I have no idea where the name originated from though

This is My name, most of the time they are but due to the fact the "ph" version is a double consonant in the middle I've gotten called Ste'Fen. Although usually said like 'Steven' I've had occasional reminders of the Ste'Fen version. If it's said like that it gets spelled Stephan.
