My niece's granddad (my dad in law) died half a year ago. She was taken to the funeral and the memorial service in Church. She was about the same age, 2 going on 3, and at that age kids really know that something is going on but cannot express what they are feeling. So that's tricky, it can effect them for the rest of their life. Some ministers/priests have special texts and books you can use for your kid dealing with the loss of a loved one, some let them take part in the service. My niece lit a candle for her granddad in Church and let 3 white balloons fly into the sky to give granddad a farewell and to let him know she was thinking of him. Though she couldn't express herself at the time, she was doing a lot of thinking, you could see by the look on her face. Involving her has really helped her dealing with loosing granddad!

When my grandfather died I was 10 and I was allowed to attend the viewing but not the actual funeral... I was allowed to say my goodbyes and see him for a last time, but my mother thought it might be too upsetting to see him placed in the ground. My younger siblings did not attend either event, they were too young.
So it really does depend on the age of the child.... Can the child emotionally handle it and do they truly understand?
