An excellent place to start would be by reading Michael Ignatieff. From Wikipedia,
"In 2004, he published The Lesser Evil: Political Ethics in an Age of Terror, a philosophical work analyzing human rights in the post-9/11 world. The book was a finalist for the Lionel Gelber Prize, and attracted considerable attention for its attempts to reconcile the democratic ideals of western liberal societies with the often-coercive nature of the War on Terrorism."
It's an eye-opener, examining terror and the slippery slope to nihilism in a stark and very real way.

You have to see the BIG picture...human management is at the base of all things distraught in our world...it is a very efficient set-up that has worked effectively for centuries.
Who set this up & who does it work for? Well, the power wonders that be...governmental & religious leaders...they run the "show" (and I mean that literally), they maintain their power & lifestyles, while making sure we don't become "too many to handle"...because most people have been wrapped up in their living struggles, we tend to forget that we ARE a majority...a powerful entity, when combined/unseparated..."They" know this!
It is natural for any species to require alpha & beta leadership to survive...but we have a quality that no other can boast...stupidity. We have the info to make the changes, the people willing to take on the responsibility of leading us through them, and possibly enough patriotism left in our bones to stop the insanities, & bring our world to it's greatest of grandness...but we choose NOT to recognize them, or support them, & fear the changes more than the lives we are now involved with...this is choice to remain ignorant, and as such constitutes stupidity.
Terrorism is simply a sect, of a faction, that feeds the big picture...it stems from instilling fear into children, and allowing that fear to create angers as they grow...fear & anger are the exteme of negative energy--all those like minds! But it is also the most efficient control method ever devised! People who have fear at the forefront of their responses, are easitly manipulated by it by others who have a good handle on how to work them--an art form that the perpetuated powers are well versed in.
See the BIG pic???

Unequal forces. Terrorism isn't an end to itself but rather a means to those ends. The main reason a group would be willing to go down a dark path such as this is because they'd be outgunned under a straight-up fight and terrorism allows them to "even the odds". They apparently feel that accomplishing thier goals would justify terrorism.

The main reason is the Muslim religion with its tradition and teachings of violence and intolerance.
The other reason is human nature. The wish of the strong to dominate and exploit the weak, while deluding our selves with good motives.
Technological progress with easier travel and communications has brought those two forces into direct conflict.
In the end I think, Islam will win by immigration and force of numbers. It will simply out breed the rest.

It is the wrong belief that this is the 'short cut' to success in this world and to the heaven after death. The other reasons can be that muslims are weak militarily, so they have no other option to fight with non-muslims. It also because of illitracy. But are all the religious people of all the religions not like that, more or less . . .

The root cause of terrorism is lack of understanding. Lack of understanding begets fear, fear begets hate. And hate is root cause of anything terriable. The terrorist have said "We do not hate the USA, we do not hate democrocy. We hate that you wont let us live like WE would like to because you dont understand us and insist that everyonr must follow your plan of government." If our government would jsut take a freakin' moment to learn about these other culture before we purge them of the area we dont like we might be surprised with what the global reaction is.

They used to be called 'freedom fighters' in colonial days. Today, even the genuine freedom-fighters are labelled ;terrorists'. Lord Mayo, the Viceroy in India, was stabbed to death, by a freedom fighter, who was hanged. Today, he would have attacked the vestiges of colonialism with a suicidal-bomb. He hangs up himself. Terrorism is yet to be defined. Even by the UN. As soon as the wise men at UN have been able to define it, the root causes shall be a public knowledge. 'Terrorists' --- those branded as such, may not be giving 'excuses', they may be drawing world attention to their misery, in efforts to gain or regain 'freedom'...!

The short answer is religion, money power and control, but consider this. The current war on terror is just another Holy War.
President George W Bush has made it clear that he reads the Bible, prays to God, and that God told him to invade Iraq. Very recently he referred to the USA’s war against terror as a war against Islamic Fascists. The other side, the Islamic Fascists, of course refer to G W Bush and the USA as Christian Infidel Dogs and so the Holy War of Words goes on, like good Christians at war against the Axis of Evil.
The above is quite mild to all the evil religious words being thrown by each side, but of course, it doesn’t stop there does it. The same sides, Christianity and Islam, are physically at war with each other, murdering innocent men, women and children in the process.
Humanity has a horrific track record of atrocities and killing caused by religion, and this war seems to be no different, just another Holy War in the name of religion, inflicting it’s madness once again onto humanity. Religion is so evil, it has even infected the President of the United States of America.

Passion for your beliefs.
As for the excuses being justified.. ,it depends on the point of view. It's a chicken and egg situation most of the time.We don't HONESTLY know who started it, it just erupts.Justification would have to mean a beginning and an end... There isn't a beginning and an end when terrorism is involved. It just keeps going. They FEEL a temporary justification, but then the other side gets their 'justification'...all of it temporary and none of it is real justification. It's like a pseudo-justification. Just like a sugar pill when you need antibiotics.
so, I guess that makes it no. It isn't justified.

The root cause of terrorism is -- terrorists.
No, their excuses are not justified.
If these people refuse to obey the laws of civilized society, then civilized society doesn't owe them the time of day.
Terrorists aren't only evil -- they're also stupid. They're stupid if they think that their tactics will win any sympathy for their cause from the rest of the world.
Their tactics only serve to damn their cause.
