Because it's expected of them. Men are supposed to be the providers and most of them see it as their job to pay the bill. They really don't expect anything from it, it's just one of the things you do on a date. Though a kiss would be a nice reward. :p

It's a gesture extended as a show of both masculinity (men have always played the role of provider--it would have been many years ago that perhaps he showed up with a bronto leg as a similar "gift") and of respect. Do they expect anything in return.......that would depend upon the individual. The best part though is that you immediately can dissmiss any guy who would expect something in return as less than honorable and not someone to waste your time with.

Since the guy traditionally asks the girl for the date, then he is repsonsible for paying for the date. They shouldn't expect anything other than your company in return.

Before I got married I would offer to help pay for the date because I thought it was only fair on my part...but that's just me

At one point in history men were the only bread winners. Of course we paid for dinner. The woman had no cash to purchase the meal or pay for the date with. (Unless her parents were going to flip the bill.) You had older guys marryinig teenagers. That was the norm when the rules were written.

They want something else, at least eventually. But that something might be friendship. Offer to pay for it yourself, if they insist, that's a good sign they want something in return other than just that..

As for why it's the usual thing - there is no good reason.

To spend time with the opposite sex, for conversation, to see how they are, if they are likeable. Some do expect something, but for most I would say no. If you are going out with a real jerk, then yes. Good luck.

As far as i can tell, because they insist. I fight my boyfriends on this issue all the time. I offer to pay, and they refuse to let me. Then few days down the road they start bitchin and moanin about the fact that they always have to pay. Well, if they don't always want to pay then they should shut up and let me pay when I offer.

Why not? Saves me from a broken budget
If the guy is paying, don't look a gift horse in the mouth
It's the proper thing for him to do

Its seen today as the right thing that the guy take the initative and pay for dinner.

you know, sometimes its easier to pay for dinner and end the date early, especially if you know in your head/heart that there is absolutely nothing good going to come of the date....just cut your loss's and move.
