DermCaps available from your vet or some onlinr stores, sounds like poochy has a skin irritation, have you checked for fleas and mites. It may well be just dry skin in which case the Dermcaps will help, also try looking at the shampoo you use to bath poochy, it might be irritating her skin.
If you suspect fleas, are or were the problem remember to rebath your dog a week later to kill off all the eggs that have now hatched.
Also try to buy a good quality dog food that contains fatty acids and ammino acids and garlic that are a balanced diet all are essential for a healthy dog. I would suggest Purina or Iams in the UK, Nutro if you're in the USA.

My dog is exactly the same choc lab/newfoundland his hair comes out in buckets full. The itching is the downey coat underneath i have been giving him moult ease which seems to slow the moulting down and seems to stop him scratting as much.

Fatty oil supplements help my dog this time of year. He has allergies. Ask your vet for EFA Caps.

Sounds like hot spots -- try cortisone tabs. The shots are hard on their hearts.
