not sure what you mean by "easier brushing". When I was a SMALL kid I had long hair and Mom would sit me down in a chair and then start combing my hair from the top, there naturally would be lots of knots and I'd cry a lot. One day she lopped off my hair. It was like cutting Samuel's hair (from the bible) and I lost my egol, and since she just lopped it off she made me look ugly and in a kid's eyes all I could do was hide. She never let me grow it long while I lived under her roof...It was almost like "I'm your drill sargeant and you will listen to me.".
Anyway, perhaps you're using a wrong technique, plus forcing your desires on her. If she likes it long then use a cream rinse on her hair and comb from the "bottom up" and not from the "top down" which should alleviate the crying and fussing. Over the years I've found that using a comb instead of a brush gets the job done, and there's no difference. If you're looking for more of a scalp massaging for her then teach her to wash her own hair and exercise the scalp. I find that longer hair is a lot easier to manage than shorter hair and more styles can be done with it.

Knowing the age of your daughter would narrow the answers down a bit. I raised five children and learned by experience. Children five and under have a lower threshold of patience/tolerence for sitting still. We all know how important that is, especially if the person styling your hair is having a bad day.
I found after son one that if I began at a year old and made the sessions short and as they aged lengthened the time it took to cut and style by three to five years each child was tolerant of sitting for a longer period.
Our second and third sons were very fussy about how thier hair looked when they went to school. And in awe I realized they weren't copying someone elses do but something of thier own creative mind.
Our daughter had long straight strawberry blonde hair. She was peach. I remember the day she marched into the kitchen while we cooked and announced she wanted her hair cut short. Everything went dark, I was speechless and my knees grew weak. My wife questioned her on why and what made her feel she wanted short hair. She defiantly looked her mother in the eye and said, "I don't want you putting my hair incurlers anymore and making my head hurt. You yell to much because it hurts me and I can't sit still.
Abouut this time my wife left us. Five kids a single dad and a fulltime and a half job. I took her to the salon and to reward her had her nails done. I still remember the look in her eyes and she almost strangled me with a hug.
Straight hair is actually a blessing, the humidity
and trying to get an even cut with curly hair leads to shaved heads or hats.
My advice is wash her hair, dry and comb straight down to the contour of her head and features, Make it a short session cutting an inch or two every three days or so. Of course if she's older than her threshold will be longer.

Duct tape her to a high back chair. Lol just kidding.
MY mom use to cut my hair too. Pretty much what you can do if you are going for a simple one layer cut is after a bath when the hair is brushed out but is still pretty wet. Part the hair on top of the head.so hair lays where it natural should or does and then taking an inch at a time cut to a slightly longer lenght of the desired lenght (remember wet hair is longer then dry hair) so cut about half inch longer then you want it. Hair cut too long can be fixed hair cut too short well you are stuck with it. when hair is at new lenght check front and back to make sure hair is even. and Viola' hair is shorter and easier to cut.

My daughter had long straight hair.
I told her I needed to get her brother's hair cut and asked if she wanted to get it styled while we were there. She was very excited about that. So we went to a bunch of websites and looked at hair styles. (Of course I chose the sites and the search criteria) she ended up finding this pic of Kelly Clarkson with this "messy" shorter cut that was just adorable. It is a little shorter than shoulder length. There it was... 8 inches of hair gone. Not only is it easier to comb.. she does her hair COMPLETELY on her own now... gel, blowdry... everything. It is REALLY nice.
P.S. MY daughter is eight. .. Good luck getting the look you are striving for.

Put a bowl on her head different sizes for different length cut excess off from edge of bowl down. The sharper the scissors the easier it cuts hair
Another good idea for low cost is look on craigs list in free section there are always beauty students looking for models.

There is a dough boy way. Get a plastic bowl that will hang down below eyes or ears, get marker draw line around bottom rim, get scisssors cut above line, by slightly. Avoid eye area, and ear area when cutting.
Find real hair cutter scissors, not everday scissors.

Begin by making an appointment for a hair cut with a professional who has a license and education on how to do just that.

You can totally learn to do it yourself. My kids are 1, 3 and 5 and I have never taken them anywhere. When they are really little I would honestly cut it while they were asleep, lol. For bangs on girls, pull all peices to the center of the forehead and take one snip right under the brow if the hair is wet....works like a charm every time. Make sure you have a good pair of hair scissors too...don't use your coupon cutting scissors! lol

get one of those small black combs and comb it through a couple of times, then you brush the comb through but stop a little lower than where you want to cut it at. Position the comb straight across and cut in line with the comb and it should be straight if you have a steady hand.

Your best bet is to take her to a professional. Mom's usually mean well....but kids will be kids. They are natural born wiggle worms, and there are so many things that can affect the way a hair cut turns out. Even cutting a childs bangs can be disastrous if you dont have the training. Take her to a salon, better yet, a salon that caters to kids. They will be best equiped to deal with a first timer. Many shops that deal alot with kids have special chairs or booster seats, and are very good with kids. Better to have it done right, then to do it yourself and risk making a mess and having to take her in anyway.
