I think it smells like fish sticks, my b/f thinks it smells like #2. I feed him the IAMS kitten dry cat food. I have tried greenies and Pit r Pat mints, but they don't work. He is five months old and his teeth look great. Is it because he cleans himself in (you know what) areas?

Okay, dry food is NOT GOOD FOR CATS!!!

Dry food, CONTRARY to what your vet may tell you, is so brittle that it shatters when your cat chews on it and sticks to the gums and teeth and starts to rot the teeth. There is a falacy that dry food helps keep the teeth clean--it is NOT TRUE.

Get your kitten OFF dry food and give it wet food.

Cats are desert animals and get most of their moisture from their food. They have what is called "low thirst drive" and are not naturally inclined to seek out a separate source of moisture. Your kitten is probably drinking lots of water, right? That's because the dry food is actually dehydrating her body and that's VERY unhealthy for her.

Dry food also has too many carbohydrates for cats and that can lead to diabetes, which is on the upswing.

Her bad breath is because the dry food is keeping her mouth and teeth dirty.

If your kitty is healthy, yes, it could be because he has cleaned himself "down there". Often, too, what may smell like one thing to one person may smell differently to another human. Women have a more acute sense of smell, so probably the kitty's breath DOES smell like fish sticks. If there is a holistic/health food store nearby, possibly there are charcoal cat mints available to try for your baby's breath. Charcoal works internally to eliminate smells that originate from the gastrointestinal system. If your kitty's GI tract needs some deodorizing, these should work. Charcoal works for humans, too. If you still have any questions, you should contact a veterinarian...maybe your kitty baby has a GI virus that could be causing the scent. Good luck!

I saw a question posted from you above this one about the black on the cats chin, I had an idea. Then I saw this one so I will suggest that you have you cats teeth checked. I have a few cats with a bad gum disease, and while I have never seen the black chin, I have seen some other odd things. Hope this helps.

it might have gotten something off of the floor or out of the trash and eaten it. but keep in mind cats lick their privates constantly so that might be part of the problem. also the cat food leaves the cats breath bad. try the cat toothbrushes at the pet stores that might help

Take him to the vet. I lsot a cat once. It had something wrong iwth it's kidneys and it's breath smelled like urine. So, there could be a chance something bad is wrong. Just take him to the vet to be sure.

If you ate fish cat food and licked your butt, your breath would smell too.

If you think your cat's breath is bad, try sniffing a dog's mouth. Hooboy, you'll gain some perspective! :-)
