well, keeping the secret that you are gay can be A skeleton in your closet. however, you can have skeletons in the closet that are NOT about being gay. so one does not equal the other. :)

Two totally different meanings. Having skeletons in the closet means that the person has something to hide or isn't being completely truthful. Coming out of the closet means that you are admitting that you are gay or lesbian.

It's a good point. The don't mean the same thing... but in some ways they are similar. I think skeletons are "secrets" or things a person wants to keep under the covers, or swept under the rug.
When someone comes out of the closet- the most widely known connotation is that they are letting the world know, that they are gay. It could also be coming out of ones shell, or blossoming.

They do not mean the same thing.

Having skeletons in the closet means that you have secrets, usually family ones, that you would rather they stayed private because they are embarrassing or shameful.

Coming out of the closet means you hid the fact that you are gay but now you aren't going to hide it anymore.

having "skeletons in the closet" means that you have a history, a past that you don't like talking about. something very severe like murder, rape, blackmail, sleeping with the boss for a promotion, getting a friend killed over something petty, etc.

"coming out of the closet" means that a person who is gay but does not act like he/she is gay FINALLY allows people to know who they really are. in other words, they feel safe or like they can trust the people around them to the degree that they feel comfortable saying they are gay.

I suppose your description of it would be pretty accurate. I mean being gay now-a-days isn't as "accepted" as many people want to say it is. so being gay is like "having skeletons in your closet." Your reasoning seems okay on this view though...

Having skeletons in you closet means hiding anything in your past that you don't want revealed (bad childhood, hurtful relationship, etc..including being gay). It applies to more people. Coming out of the closet means revealing that you are gay. So you are partially right.

" having skeletons in your closet " means that you have a secret that you are hiding ( a secret about anything), but " coming out of the closet " means that you are telling your secrets to any and everyone that will listen.

They are not the same. "Having skeletons in your closet" means having regrets and secrets you don't share with anyone. "Coming out of the closet" means admitting your gay.
