In times past, one of the clergy would hide in the rafters above the door with a bucket of water to pour on people as they entered. People then started looking up and would point when they saw him and the tradition of pointing up just sort of stuck and carried on.

Some say it originated in the south during slavery. It was a signal that the slave had received permission to leave the church from his master. Just a guess.....
You can go to snopes.com as someone suggested but they say that it is "undetermined" so they don't know where it comes from either.

You are a black person who goes to a black "holiness" church. There is nothing biblical about that jesture but I guess that it is suppose to symbolize humility in the house of the Lord.
