You are assuming that this practice is universal - I can assure that it is not. The western look and practice is very much encroaching on traditional values.
An amusing observation has been that the women fron Saudi Arabia come from abroad wearing short dresses with skin exposed and just before the Airplane lands they all rush off to the WC to cover up before landing. But in more moderate countries they are going public with some stomachs showing -tight jeans -arms exposed and even cleavage showing. These practices are not universal but changes are coming about.

Why the intolerance? they wear what they want, if it's so problematic then they should do something to make it change. The prohibition on women driving is intensely debated these days ... and many women are active participants..progress is being made at their own pace. As for dress, Not all Muslim women dress like that and not all Muslim women cover. The most populated Muslim country is Indonisia yet, you'll rarely see women dressed in black from head to toe and covering hair is getting popular only of recent. The only Muslim countries that inforces dress codes are Saudi Arabia and Iran. In both cases men aren't allowed to wear whatever they want either. Nor is it illegal for the women dress to dress in a different color. Black is popular, if they have a problem with it, it would be up to them to change it. Just because some find it hideous or unbearable, doesn't mean all find it that way. I remember in high school, you were cool if you dressed all in black with showing just your eyes... surprising you might find ... but it's a fact that easterners and westerners in many areas are very different and don't view things the same way. You might argue some are forced to dress this way ...true.. but many aren't ..nor do they see anything wrong with the way they dress. They most likely have issues they see unbearable and incorrect about western style of dressing. So,.. Live and let live.

Imagine if a woman were to walk in front of you in those skimpy things of today. What would the first thing a MAN would think? A man as in the gender disregarding the race or religion. Lust for the woman is first.

Islam asks the women to cover themselves up so as not to incite these kind of thought. So as to protect themselves from the men that can do harm to them. We do not stew btw, its perfectly cool beneath the tudung, unlike what people think. ^_^

As to why the colour black? This one is mostly cultural preferance. Here where i live, heck! We dress up in the multi coloured clothing as any other girl around. I myself prefer black just because it doesn't stain easily as white or other lighter colours. And i just like the colour black.

Men wear what they want? But don't they cover the essential bits that are to be covered?

Good point. It must be difficult for the women to keep themselves under control with those wantonly dressed men around! Time to cover up the men too.

The Dark Man X: what you wrote is kind of sweet, but all your comparisons have to do with merchandise or something that is owned. A woman is not merchandise, and is not a thing to be owned any more than a man is.

Women can only show their face and hands. IF they dress how the western ppl dress, then they will get looks from men. It is for modesty. And they dont have to wear black, my sisters wear any colour they want. It is an order by God for them to wear it. and they wear it proudly. its not like they are opressed. Men cannot show above their knees. That is the code. Keeps us away from bad stuff. WE are told to wear modest clothing.

Their Holy Book says: Female should cover their AURAT (face, hair, some even said voice). This explain why in Arab countries, women are not allowed to do a broadcast, why in Taliban regime, women cannot be seen in public unless covered by "tent" from head to toe

The muslim answer is that they are protecting their women with restrictions on clothing, travel, ocuupation, etc. It actually implies a low opinion of both sexes. To need clothing to protect them from "the eyes of the unclean" implies a belief that muslim men have no moral restraint. Restrictions on travel, occupation, etc., implies that the women are too weak to take care of themselves. I think it is sad to imply such things about ones own peole, but, perhaps they simply knnow themselves better than I do.
