We now live in a society where girls outperform boys in school. A number of causes have been put forward but I think the most intriguing is the lack of male teachers in the classrooms. I just read on cnn.com about a study that says that men learn best from men and women learn best from women. Is the imbalance really that simple? Or is there a greater problem in the lack of male leadership accross all of society?

Regarding teacher gender:

There was a long period, in American history, when ONLY men were allowed to be teachers. I female teacher, sush as the sterotypical "school marm" was a rare occurence. It wasn't intil the early 20th century that American began to be taught by qualified women. After that, male teachers were rare, except in areas such as shop and P.E.

In the meantime, institutions of higher learning, such as colleges and univrsities continued to be bastions of male domination. Women found it next to impossible to gain teaching positions. This trend continues to this day, although improving all the time.

Who knows the trends of the future.

Lack of male leadership? What are you talking about? The leadership in almost ALL layers of society is largely male! Women find it VERY difficult to assume levels of leadership because of resistance of the males in place.

Girls outperform boys in school because girls mature at an earlier age than boys. This doesn't level out until well past high school age. I'll bet the study you mentioned was conducted at some school level between K through 12th grade.

And I certainly can't or won't dispute those results.

it just so happens that men are not too interested in staying or even starting with that profession. I suppose it would be more attractive to men if the job paid more, which it SHOULD ANYWAY. but there should DEFINITELY NOT be a stipened for men simply because the school system wants to attract them to this kind of job. It would be unfair to teacher across the board and discourage good teachers from joining the profession in the first place.

I think that anyone can learn the same thing from the oppisite sex. I think the imbalance is more complicated then that, more like people just dont want to learn anymore. Rather they would prefer to play games or watch tv.
