My chihuahua has a habit of chiting on the floor without advising me that he needs to use the bathroom. He does this once and a while but when he does this he gets me mad. He knows he has to go outside, why does he think he can use the bathroom in the house? I do take him outside and he uses it outside but sometimes he just seem to not ask. Help please!

I do watch him close. I even ask him. I had him since he was 4 months old-he is now three years old.

Like I said I do watch him. He cries when he has to use the bathroom. Its funny, cause he will wait 5 hours, by the time I get home from work, to use the bathroom.

I know didn't answer your Q, i just wanted to let you know I am going through it too and share your frustration.

hi, i have 10 chihuahuas, so i think that answers your question! lol. But to be honest if you have a chi and treat him/her like a dog, with training, dad by day training then yes they make great pets. But those you see them as small babies and dress them up and talking them for a carry around town, these are the chis that dont make good pets, because they dont understand what is right and wrong. A chi is a dog that needs to no what the word NO means, same with sit and they need socialising with other dogs. If you dog is carried all the time, it will see the out side world in a different light and become scarred of it, and when people touch that dog will go for them. I have seen so many chi owners see a dog and pick theres up and this gives your dog the wrong impression of other dogs and will then bark etc at them. I have always had chis, and they have so much love to offer, great little dogs with a bit heart. Hope this helps, if you need any more help, im happy for you to email me. Good luck, maria

Maybe he IS telling you and you just don't know it. One of my dog's will sit and stare at me. She is too submissive to actually come and paw at me like my other dog. Also, my friend's dog will go stare at the back door, even when my friend isn't in the room.
Some dogs just aren't very vocal about it. Pay more attention to what he does before he used the bathroom. If this means tethering him to your beltloop with his leash, then do so.

your baby may have not been able to get your attention. interesting how he askes you every other time. just pick it up, it can't be that big. and i really hope you are not hitting or rubbing his nose in it, because he doesn't know what is possessing you to do that, and it hurts him, phisically and emotionally. poor baby. just pick it up! it may be his nerves... i hope this doesn't haunt me, who ever you are. animals and children have no voice, they depend on our sorry behinds, do not hit him!!!!!! karma is a beotch!!!!! i wish the puppy could really ask, i'd represent him in a new york minute, just pick it up, already!!!!!

since he is an older dog use the four month rule. the first thing to remember about housetraining a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (marning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck
remember any dog is only as good as his training. also make sure you are paying attention to his signals. all dogs don't go to the door and bark i had a boxer once that would sit on the floor in front of me and just stare ast me. it took me a while to realize that was is way of saying he needed to go. the one i have now simply stands parrell to the door. it's up to me to pay attention and see him there.
