I have a 1965 with a hurst in it but it is not orginal nor is the 72 440

The pistol-grip hurst shifter was in the 70 model year. They were standard in the Challengers and Cudas.

1965 should have a hurst shifter, however, Dodge had a brain fart and added a generic shifter in 1966 that was a problem child and they when back to the hurst.
To answer your question the first Hurst pistol grip that I was aware of was in the 1970 models.
